Wondering which version all you techs find the most useful. I have a copy of RC19 on it's way to me right now, are there better versions to have on hand?

By today’s standards there isn’t really one version better than the other simply because the series leans heavily into theory and less into practical use. I remember a good portion of the early chapters being dedicated to teaching barebone EE theory basics. You can find the 4th version online for free if you do a simple google search.

Mmm, I see, thanks. What would you recommend on the more practical side of things? I like the theory stuff, but it's also good to know that certain switch types have been found to fail early, etc.

Oh yeah, for sure. tubebooks.org actually has a whole pile of 'em, so conceivably I could just reference those. I do prefer a physical copy though if I can get it.

You know that’s a fair question and one I can’t really answer because I don’t rely on books for practical design. Theory is helpful but is just theory and can lead to unproductive progress if you can’t apply it in a meaningful manner. I go from datasheets to design to simulation all from scratch and from just years of experience. Tubes, opamps, BJTs, FETs, it’s all the same to me. Hopefully someone else can chime in to make recommendations.

I totally get it. I do own an original physical copy printed in 1953 of the 4th edition myself that hasn’t been written in and is in great condition. I found it in a library sale years ago during the dead of winter for a meer $30. Abebooks has one that looks good right now. They are getting hard to find in good condition.

Thanks for the heads up, I forgot to check there. Turns out the one I ordered is a re-print by AES/CE Dist. But I ain't gonna complain at $12 shipped. Thinking I'll probably get the RC30 reprint from them too at some point, if only 'cause it has some more relevant tubes in it plus a nicer cover graphic. The irrational appeal of getting an original though... Hmm...

After you read it give me a call and we can diagnose my ultra….
