I haven't bought a new wah pedal since '98 but old standby just shit the bed (original 535). I don't care for the 535Q and really haven't tried anything else that's been made since back then. I use it primarily for blues rock and funk...what do I need to be looking at these days?

The older Budda's a great. One of the few wahs that really stay defined when using a lot of gain.

I used an original 535 for about 15 years too, Bill. About 2 years ago I switched over to the CAE, which I am actually really liking. The sweep is much wider than on the original 535 - to the point that I basically rock the pedal in the middle 70% of the range most of the time. It's cool having these "outlier" tones on either end of the sweep though - it can make for some cool effects, when you want to accent a certain phrase.

I really like the dunlop dimebag crybaby from hell that i have. It has different sweep settings and a boost toggle. I'm happy with it.

Teese makes great ways. Have a wheels of fire wah and love it. Their Rmcs ae nice too.

The boutique wah will be Teese gear. Budda still commands a price. Both are totally worth it. However a nice cheap option is something like the Ibanez WD7 weeping demon. Nice sweep, quiet, solid.

I have several old dunlap crybaby wahs and a Thompson organ crybaby that sound great. But the one I have have using at gigs for years is the Fultone. Reliable, quite, true bypass and sounds very good.

I've been really happy with my Cantrell wah. Would love to try the Buddy Guy and a Reese though.

+1. Of the wah's that I have tried in the past 5 years or so.

Thanks for all the suggestions...I like what I hear from the CAE and Buddy Guy clips. Some of the others sound cool but don't seem to be quite as ideal for the music styles that I mentioned from the clips that I've listened to (I know...clips :dunno: ).

They both seem to be the same price new as well...not helping my decision. Anybody owned/played both of these?

Your 535 should be fixable by most pedal builders or modders since it uses full size through hole components and not SMDs.

As for a new wah, the CAE should get you in the ballpark of some of the 535 tones.

Yeah, I think I just need a new AC jack and pot...a battery fixed the cutout problem that I was getting, now I'm just getting pot noise. It's a sealed pot so I can't really clean it.

I still want a new wah as a backup.

I've had both the CAE and the Buddy Guy, and each have features the other doesn't. The CAE has internal trim pots for both inductors so you can tweak away. I tweaked too much and it drove me nuts. So I went with the Buddy Guy and have been happier. They are cool because they have the toe switch to switch between way sounds on the fly. You can't go wrong with either, but I think with the music you described the Buddy Guy will suit your tastes perfectly.

535 is a very well liked wah 'round here and everywhere else. I'd say fix it.

I'm a Fulltone Clyde Deluxe guy. Something about the tone...I love it, and can't get it from anything else. Ain't everyone's cup o' tea, but I love the vibe. Cool voicing options too.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Damn fine taste in wahs there, Carl ;)
