How do they stack up? I have the standard script with led and i want to try something different. If i go the 74 reissue i am going to have to get it modded.

I have both, the 74 changed my tone too much, the orange box is on my board

The only thing i am unsure on is if the orange box is closer to the original phase 90's from the 70's or is the phae 90 74?

The 74 has the same layout and circuit as an original. Only difference is the components. For example 1% tolerance resistors in the new ones instead of 5% or 10% and different caps

How about the orange box?

Just talked to my buddy at Whirlwind (they are local). It's an exact replica of the original Phase 90 component-wise, but with true bypass, and a led, and a 9v adaptor

I think i am going to try the whirlwind. I have looked at some pictures and it does look like it is pretty much the same as the originals. I cant see myself buying the custom shop 74 and having it modded it ends up being close to $200.

I have the orange box and love it. It replaced an MXR EVH phase 90. The orange box is just so smooth and natural, really blends well with the original guitar tone.

I debated on gett the '74, but didn't want to mess with the mods. One of the knocks on the EVH was the bypass, not the greatest. So for me true bypass, LED, and power jack are necessary. MXR IMO should consider offering a '74 with these features.

Both MXR's (in this clip) sound better to me. They have deeper bottom, and more clarity. The reissue "74 Hand-wired sounds best to my ears.
