So the new Whitesnake 30th anniversary box set dropped last Friday and the only thing really that intrigued me was the 4 songs remixed(not remastered). The remastered ones I don’t notice a difference much.

So the four remixes songs are:

Still of the Night
Gimme all your love
Is this Love
Here I go again

A few observations, I think they sound killer. There is way less reverb. Dave’s voice is almost dry. Sykes’s guitars are more up front, you can hear all the guitar parts. None are lost to ambient Reverb.
I used to think David doubled his tracks, but now I think Sykes might be the double? The solo on still of the night is way more clear, and you can hear each note on the fast run. on Gimme all your love, I thought during the verse the guitars were lowered in the mix, but you can clearly hear Sykes roll the volume knob to lower the guitars.
Also, definately not Sykes on here I go again solo. It sounds punched in. Odd. Cuz the other songs the solo doesn’t. You can clearly hear the punch in/out.

Anyway, these are the best parts of the box set, and 1 thing more is you do appreciate David’s vocals. When less reverb is applied you can hear and appreciate how high and powerful his voice once was.

Will check it out!

As for Here I go again, I´m fairly sure the album version is Vandenberg and the radio edit solo is Dann Huff. So there definitely is punch in done at a later time.

I got mine on Saturday and I agree with you as the remixes are killer!!! The main remastered disc sounds pretty good but it is not much difference in the sound. The box set is still worth picking up in my opinion.

I agree..I didn’t listen to the live stuff yet from that tour with Vivian and the hired lineup. Kinda skipped over that.

I just listened and don’t care for it. Seems to have lost high end, vocals are dry and some of the doubling sounds off. Original was better IMO

Vandenberg did the solo on the album/most popular version. To this day I've yet to hear the Huff version ever played on the radio.

Vocals are to dry to me. Prefer the original mix there. Guess I like that 80's grease. Guitars sound good though. Definitely more upfront.

I thought the guitar solos were slightly buried in a cave of reverb on that record. I'd like to hear a modern mix to see how the guitar sounds holds up.

Could be just hearing a different version is throwing me off but I don't care for it either over the original. By drying out the mix things seem slightly disjointed. I did like the bass sound on Is This Love. In a way though it does make me want to hear a re-mix of Fly On The Wall with less verb/delay on Brian Johnson and the Drums. Didn't care for the Megadeth remixes that Dave did either. I don't mind these re-mixes as long as they always have the originals available. Did they ever release BluRays of Star Wars IV-VI original cuts?

That man has a sick vibrato. Always loved his style.

Not sure if many have checked this one out a few years ago, "The Purple Album". Its Deep Purple stuff, with Hoekstra and Beach on guitars. Killer album, great tone, stellar playing.

Wow!!! Man vocals and guitar on "Still of the Night" were both killer. I still love that my music back then was drenched in reverb but good to hear it a bit more clear.

I've heard it on Sirius/XM and it's horrible. The whole mix is shit. It's just a keyboard wash, with a super cheesy Mr Mister styled solo.

I think Dave's voice amazing without all of the verb, which shows once again how incredible he was in his prime. As to the overall mix, on my laptop speakers, it feels like a rough mix, that dry vocals don't sit on the guitars very well. I wonder if they tracked the delay or reverb on the guitars, so they had to do some digital manipulation to pull it out of the mix? I think that if everything was tracked dry, they could have made a really great modern mix of this.

The Evolutions disc is killer, Sykes is on fire

Definitely!!! The main reason I bought the box set is to hear some more Sykes stuff!!!

Yeah, and not just the solos; it's the whole mix. So many cool records from that time period were marred by the fact that drums, guitars, vocals, and entire mixes were often drenched with reverb. The dreaded 80s snare sound was the worst -- it seemed to be on just about every record I bought back then.

I like these remixes but still prefer the original. I like hearing the guitar tracks more clearly. In fact, there is a riff or two I played differently based on the old mix. It's cool to hear more of the detail from that perspective. I think the reverb drench helped the performances sound tighter. I don't know if that makes sense but that's my what my ears hear. Coverdale and Sykes sound amazing!! The remastered versions sound amazing and will listen to those 8 out of 10 times although it is fun to listen to the new mix.

I like both, but the remixes sound more like how I dial in my Marks. Brighter for sure.

Wish they remixed the whole album, it's fun to listen to, what a duo they were.
