The overwhelming majority of guys that Ive run into were straight up and honest about what they did or didnt do. However, The few guys that I have run into that were special forces,SEALs etc were the ones who said the least; very humble..

Good Point! I've found this to be pretty much true in most areas. Even here on rig-talk, the best player's/musician's I've heard here are usually the most humble, least shit-talking, etc. etc.

If I was an insecure twirp like alot of folks, I could lie to anyone on here about anything in my past and they'd believe it.

Dude, you had the balls to pose in those epic band promo pictures with your chaps...given that, I would believe almost anything you say...no insecurities there

While in the Marine Corp (regular Marines), I was stationed with and became close friends with a Force Recon Marine. My $$ are on these guys. If I were in a combat situation I would want these brothers by my side. To my brothers...Semper Fi!

This is from the website:

"As a Recon Marine, you'll fight the secret wars that never make the front page and bring the highest level of expertise to every operation you are involved in."

"In addition to regular Marine Corps training, a Reconnaissance Marine candidate (Private First Class or Corporal) will be required to attend the following specialty schools:

The Basic Reconnaissance Course - at either Expeditionary Warfare Training Group Pacific or Atlantic.
Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape (SERE) Training - at either NAS North Island, CA, or NAS Brunswick, ME.
Army Airborne School - Ft. Benning, GA.
In addition candidates are required to complete several distance learning courses including Land Navigation, Operations Against Guerrilla Units, Terrorism Awareness, Infantry Patrolling, and Communications.

Advanced training opportunities include courses in combatant diving, scout sniper training, military free fall, jumpmaster, and dive supervisor."

Website: http://www.military.com/marine-force-recon/training.html

More requirements:

"Currently there isn't a direct enlistment route to Force Recon. You must first join the Marine Corps and then apply and be selected to become a Reconnaissance Marine. To be eligible for Marine Force Recon, candidates must:

Marine Force Recon Qualifications
Be a U.S. citizen.
Score 105 or higher on the GT portion of the ASVAB.
Tip: Scoring high on the ASVAB is key to being able to join an elite team like the Marine Corps' Force Recon. It also makes a difference when it comes to enlistment bonuses and choosing your MOS. Visit our Ace the ASVAB section to learn how to make sure you qualify for the bonuses and career options you deserve.

Possess a 1st class swimmer qualification.
Obtain a first class score on the PFT.
Have 20/200 near visual acuity or visual acuity not to exceed 20/400 with a completed PRK eye surgery. Normal color vision is recommended, but not required provided the Marine can complete a vivid red and vivid green recognition test.
Complete Marine Rifleman Course.
Assigned as a primary Military Occupational Specialty to entry-level Marines and obtain a manager-approved lateral-move.
Marines who graduate from the Basic Reconnaissance Course (BRC).
Volunteers from any MOS may be certified for AMOS only by Recon unit commanders after attending the SRC or through MOJT at a BRC endorsed unit-training program to include 6 months in an MOS 0321 billet.
Be eligible for a secret security clearance."

removed at the request of a friend.

I met another "Lucky" years ago who lived on the other side of the coin. He was a colors wearing biker.(I won't say which club) He got the name "Lucky" when someone stuck a .357 in his face and shot him and he lived to tell the story... but get this.... his name REALLY stuck after because about 8 years later, he took 11- 9mm bullets from an UZI while sitting in his truck. He started the truck and drove to the hospital (drove right though the emergency doors) and lived to tell about it again!!!

The SAS are tough as nails, I'm seriously impressed. I watched the documentary on the break-in of the embassy in London performed by the SAS, and WOW.

Not too sure about the US Military, they kick an assload of ass, I know that. :D

My CO is a Colonel in Recon who has been in the Corps for 36 years (prior enlisted). He hates that book and tears apart the entire Op. Im no expert on what happened over there, but to my understanding there was a lot of disobeying SJAs, ROEs, and SOPs on that entire Op. Not trying to take away what those men did and fought for, but a lot of shit that they fucked up was on their own back. These are his words, not mine, but for the amount of respect I have for the man, and the amount of experience he has had in the Corps, I tend to believe what he says to be fairly true.

I think a lot of what the public's perception of what happens in the military is warped beyond all fuck. Most civilians have no clue as to how the military functions or why certain rules are put in place which may seem odd to their everyday lifestyles. Hollywood movies have completely fucked up the perception of what military life is like, how wars are actually fought, and what the mentalities of Marines (I cant speak for the other services) are like. This is to include all the "sexy" services that are out there. I think the two best representations of American military life available to the public are One Bullet Away by Nathaniel Fick, and Generation Kill as seen in the representation presented by HBO. But again, these true stories can sometimes be difficult to comprehend by those who have not actually experienced them (for an unavoidable lack of understanding of what is being talked about ie: acronyms, training, ROEs etc).

I guess what Im trying to say, is that being in the military is not what a lot of people think it is. For all the good, there is a lot of bad, as can be said for anything in life. The public sees the portrayal of battles, encounters, and Ops in a "sexy" lime light. The honesty behind it all, however, is that for every minute of battle, there is a week or more of training, sitting around, and non "sexy" actions taking place. Hence the age old military adage, "Hurry up and wait!" The anticipation of the battle can be much more stressful at times than the battle itself. The training is designed so that when the bullets start flying, Marines don't cower up into the fetal position, rather revert back to their basic instincts, which hopefully by then, is their training. I know that in the Corps you train for months and months and months at a time for that one 5 minute time span of actual combat seen in theater. Anyways, I fucking love the USMC and see myself serving for a hopeful full 20 (we'll see what happens, depends on a lot of shit).

In conclusion, the Marines fucking rock!!! Im going out to the field tomorrow at 0600 and wont be back until Tuesday night, but Ill check back in to this thread to see where its gone and how badly Ill get flamed for this post :D

let me start off by saying i do not want to get in a flame war with ya,after all they are not your words but someone elses ,but i question how your CO knows that those guys in the book disobeyed orders.Your CO is not a SEAL, not ever same branch of the military. i would assume that that op was top secret,so how would he know unless he read the book and saw holes in the story that i didnt, because im a civilian and hes a trained soldier or maybe he was in Afgahnistan where this took place, maybe im naieve but i dont see why Marcus would lie about what happened in those mountains.anyway i dont mean any disrespect to you or your CO ,im just curious. i think all U.S. military is tough as nails and i respect you all. keep safe

mike

why would you ask this question in the first place? you better do some push ups if you wanna be at the top at home depot.

In all seriousness, no one fucks with salty ass Marines, not SEALs, not Army Spec Ops, nobody

+1. A lot of mean mother, special ops in the U.S military, but the Marines will fuck you up.

When I went through WOCS back in the early 90's we had a dude that joined up from ROK army. Nobody, and I mean nobody fucked with that dude and there were quite a few tabbed out dudes that would not even dream of messing with him. He was a bad ass mofo.

I know one former SEAL. He has never mentioned it once.
I can assure you that 99.99% of people who tell you they were any of those specialty branches are nothing more than people who failed after the first day or two. If they were, part of their training is to not talk about it. And you would never know who they were due to their extreme ability to keep it secret.
These few select people are all extreme. It takes a very touched person to become one. It is a lifestyle, not just an option. They live and die what they are made into.
