I'd like a fuzz at some point but have no idea where to start. Something not too expensive that can also do subtle fuzz where it sits just nicely over the top of your overdrive to thicken and gnarl it up but still articulate.

good point. One thing I like about upfront stuff like this is that you can model and organize something that is unique for one's personal voice as opposed to "hey he is playing through xyz amp because it is cookie cutter pre-amp voicing".
Gilmour is a master of this stuff and his tone is amazing and HUGE if you have every seen him live.
Because fuzz was not popular with 80's hair metal. I Love Fuzz and The Gear Page have a 100 post about fuzz for every post about fuzz on Rig Talk. There is about three people that post on Rig Talk that were hardcore fuzz users.

Check out the Source Audio Kingmaker. Great fuzz that allows you to also load about 50 more dirt pedals into it. From Fuzz Face, Muff and Bender to RAT, TS and more.
I usually use fuzz and overdrive together like Gilmor with the overdrive after the fuzz to smooth out the sound. Tube overdrives seem to work best. But have had good results with the Zvex Distortron. Boss BD2 Blues Driver is also popular used this way.
I rarely use overdrive to drive fuzz. But I do like a TS9 into a Rat.
