Can somebody give me a run down of this amp? How does it differ from a standard 2203 and is it worth the 2K+ prices folks ask for them?

There were only something like 600 of the ZW amps made with only like 200 of them imported to the states. They were all handwired and more or less at the time the Zakk version came out, there wasn't a 2203 reissue. Everybody who played a 2203 was stuck playing old 80's versions.

The one I played had 6550 tubes in it...I know this is what zakk does with his 2203's, but I don't know if the Zakk version came from the factory that way or not.

FWIW the amp sounds huge, but I'd look elsewhere (like the reissue 2203 or the Kerry King version). The Zakks are still fetching a ton of money and if you are playing that's a better route. If you are collecting obviously Zakk has a huge fanbase that guys will fork out the dough for.

My choice right now is the Kerry King version.

Marshall has another Zakk version coming out all black head cabinet.

I owned 2 of them and they was nice amps, i sold them both for around 2100 and ive seen a few others in the last year go for that.

I have one. It's a decent amp. I haven't had the opertunity to compare it to anything else. I bought it when they came out, because I was such a fanboi at the time, not so much anymore. I probably wouldn't sell it unless I was in dire straits, because there's not that many around.

I paid like $1700 new when they came out, doubt I'd pay what people are asking for them now though, I'd get something a little more versitile.

I'd add also I don't play it that much, I play my Peavey Classic 30 and my PodXT more. :)

i bought one when it came out. if i remember correctly it was wired for 6550's. on it's own i wasn't impressed, but when i ran it in stereo with my tremoverb-

From what I remember when they came out, they are the same thing as the 2203 reissue except they came stock with 6550s and had different cosmetics.

That is exactly what they are... You extra money was for the Zakk BLS branded face plates and the cover and what not's.... I have had 3 of them recently and they were all just a plain old 2203 with 6550 power tubes in em...

Killer amps tho if your in to the Zakk Look? other wise grab a 2203 and throw some 6550's in there and your there man...

Zakk actually uses an 80's 2203 with horizontal inputs and board mounted pots in a rack behind the stacks
most of the the signature ones are for backup only
the new signature ones aren't even plugged in

all of zakks amps that ran 6550's back in the day were modified by one person - his amplifier logo company is a skull - forgot the guys name nowdays, cant seem to remember or find it. the only thing that he claimed he had done to them was screen grid upgrades, heater current upgrades, and the ability to bias 6550's properly.

Just curious but what brand of 6550s did the amp come with?

Theres no difference between a stock 800 and ZW 800 besides the tubes,it sounds warmer than a stock 800.
And it doesn't sound like Zakks heads, not sure if his are stock or if Dave has done a mod to them.

Not sure who you're referring to, but Zakk was hooked up with Lee Jackson for awhile during the first few Ozzy records.

Seems cool but also seems pricey.

Did the Kerry King JCM get discontinued?

Yeah I saw that, wasn't a fan personally. Definitely preferred his original sig head.

for the price of the zack just do yourself a favor and get an original 81 800 or the late 70's jmp 22o3(same circuit). The only differance with the zack is that it has 6550 tubes as alot of the originals did an its an easy switch. Other then that u r paying for the cosmetics which I would rather not have anyhow
