Legendary Tones Mr. Scary

Well, Lynch has great ears. He mentioned his new go to are his JCM800's with the scary mod over his Plexis. Knowing how particular he is about tone, I decided to try one in my 82' combo. Sounds great! Just gives you more of a great thing and is not bloated when you leave the switch in the down position. It does indeed feel like "more" from your amp's core tone. Pedals sound great but they do a diff thing and they impart their tonal characteristic over the amp's sound. This thing feels natural. I have it set around 2 O'clock and I pull back the preamp so it stays tight. Sounds great and a lot of fun to play. I think it might even be enough for me to play lead on but like most, I sometimes like a wee little push from an OD with the level up. Mixed reviews so far on this forum but the Mr. Scary is worth looking into.

I have the HotMod V2 version in my 2203x and it's worth trying it out IMO. The only downside is that the amp does not clean up as well with the volume knob, and like you said, OD's react slightly differently. Otherwise, it really enhances the amp and you gain a lot of gain from it. It's pretty much a permanent addition to that amp.

Some people have said the Scary mod will bring more punch if you lower the gain. I wasn't sure how it would sound if I maxed the gain. Would it become like a big mushy thing? I'm not the biggest fan of overdrive pedals because as you mentioned, they do hijack the tone just a little bit.

Yes full pin dials up the gain but if you pull back preamp it will still tighten. I just like a bit more so for me it is perfect just past noon. When I record, everything sounds more gain heavy anyways so it is better to record with less gain.

Man did everyone have the same urge I did the last month? I was done with gear then made up for lost time. And on a wait list for a new mod afd inspired or something

Wanted a scary. Got a hotmod. Might trade in because I did want knob control. That said. It does punchy and gainy.

I’d just use a differnt amp for cleans

I'm on the list for the AFD as well. Caswell mod. Why not? Cheaper than sending your amp away and modding!

Sounds like they have figured out the tubby issues the Hot Mod seemed to have. We all know Mr. Lynch will be back to his plexi's next month......maybe a Diezel, maybe an SLO..... and so on and so on:LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL:

Is that a hot mod AFD version ?

I like the Mr Scary. It works well with my 2204. Just takes a bit to figure out the sweet spots between MV, pre amp gain and Mr scary gain

Yes, they got Caswell's blessing for a limited run. His take on adapting what he did in #39 into the hotmod format. They will start with limited run and then go to a standardized version. Limited run will have NOS pre and be signed by Caswell.

That sounds very interesting

Limited version is around $460 i think (regular price plus the upgraded tubes).
Regular version will have different tubes, no signature, & will be a different color
Yes that is my understanding as well. I might just opt for standard version and put my own NOS tube in it. I don't really need Caswell's signature.
