I've been listening to some stuff with crazy time signatures and timing and I'd like to include some of this style into my own playing, does anyone have tips as to where to start? I find it hard to play and keep time with lots of different metres changing all the time.

It's much harder to get into the swing of playing say.. 5/4 or 9/8 and I'm not used to counting time as I play, just tapping with my foot.

I write a lot in odd time sigs, and I don't even think about. I just play whatever comes to mind and try to make patterns that I can remember, then I let my drummer deal with the time and counting.

Try not to overcomplicate things just for the sake of sounding mathy, I just started trying to write this style of music as well and studying polyrythms has helped me alot.

I've written some things in Polyrhythm Meshuggah style. That's where you play in 4/4, but the rhythm's are for lack of a better word "f'd up" so that each time you repeat a phrase you end up being off by a 1/8 or 16th beat from what you 'expect' to hear, or something like that. Then there's the turnaround which ends the polyrhythm and brings it back to beat 1. I find writing stuff like that fun and challenging, I think it's challenging yourself that's the fun part. I still can't for the life of me play Rational Gaze... that's just too f'd up for me to handle

I say dont bother 99 times out of 100 it sounds like total shit, imo of course...

I love odd signatures :) I still use 4/4 a lot, but I just love throwing in some odd shit here and there.....

I like alternating too....like 1 measure 7/8 1 measure 8/8 repeat :) or like 3/4 3/4 3/4 5/4

Just weird stuff, as long as it sounds completely normal the average listener won't even realize.

Dude...I'm with you...I've never even heard of Math Metal....

and no Scotty....no Skullet here (but I am kinda on the old side) :D

Is that the kind where you have to walk like a sand crab with your guitar under your balls?

Physics-Core is the next big thing you guys. God, get with the times! :D No, seriously though. I heard the Dillenger Escape Plan dubbed "math core" over 10 years ago or some shit. Titles people come up with for genres are ridiculous, but I really like writing in odd time sigs, like Tool and Meshuggah, newer Deftones, etc. Even some classic stuff like Zep has a few odd time sigs. Ive been writing that way for years.
You just have to let it come naturally so it falls into a groove. If you just force a bunch of random riffing and there's no feel, it usually won't work.

Everything I write ends up having at least 3, if not more, time signatures in it. I love playing in odd meters, and it's even better when a riff switches from one odd meter to another quickly. 7/8, to 9/8, to 4/4, back to 7/8. Stuff like that keeps me on my toes, paying attention to my playing.
