My old 1983 Kramer baretta(maple body and a all maple neck.OFR) was not too bright, if anything that things sounded like Godzilla in a bad mood!
Miss that guitar!

Yep. That's my experience with this one. Very sustaining and tight, but not brighter than ash or alder.

 Love maple guitars!

BK VHII is not as bright as the duncan 78

To my ears the VHll is brighter , at least it was in the alder Strat I tried them in.

The VH2 is MAYBE just a tiny bit brighter and just a little more output (regardless of DC resistance rating) to my ear as well. I wonder if it is more the A5 magnet in the VH2 vs. the A2 magnet in the "78 more than anything. Goes to show you, everyone is different. Either way, the VH2 and '78 are pretty much in the same ball park.

Damm...
In my charvel star(alder as well) the 78 was on brighter side...
The VHII was one of the most deep bass heavy pickup I ever had...
Go figure...

The alder Strat I've got is really picky about what pickup is in it. It's got a maple board and vintage style trem but for some reason it's a dark sounding guitar. I've heard the 78 in clips where it was bright and cutting but in this guitar it just sounded dull. For the moment the VHll is working really good in there.

i had the same experience in a few guitars including my les paul.
The VH II for me was too bright, the 78 was bright but had real good mids to even it out.

Well go figure. I've had the VH2 and my "78 in my alder strat with Floyd and maple neck and they were so close once height was adjusted where I like them that it's really nitpicking to tell them apart. Most of the difference I can tell I think is more due to A2 vs. A5 magnets than anything. Neither one is bass heavy. The base is articulate and tight, but not heavy or booming. I love both pickups. So far they are my favorites. I still need to try the MCP blackbelt and the Zhangbucker Brownbucker though.

Awesome! I've had an itch for quite a while to build a 5150 clone using a nice deep blue instead of red along with the correct black and white stripes and no space tape. I've seen picks around the web of a couple of them done in a deep blue color that I thought looked really cool If I ever get around to doing it, it will be loaded with one of the pickups we've been discussing.

Funny you mention blue. There is a guy on YT, very good player actually, nails Ed's live without a net solo, with a Blue 5150 build.

Looks beautiful in blue. His isn't striped, but the blue against the maple neck is sweet looking.

Nice build dude. Black fretboard dots too +1
Need a custom headstock logo though.

cool guitar. I love maple bodies, and that tight feel. great for the chuggah chuggah thing, really defined and articulate, at least that was my experience with maple bodies. I dig them man!

I think George Lynch was big on maple bodies in the 80s and I always dug the tight chuggah chuaggah palm mutes he got

Thanks! Yeah I thought about a logo, but never could think of anything I wanted to see there. Then I got used to the look of it as it is. I guess I'm not terribly imaginative. lol.

For a maple Kramer barretta(maple-rosewood) that I had the best pickup was the BK Miracle Man...
If u are looking for heavier tone...
