The rack and mixer units are going pretty cheap on ebay. I know the 003 is the current unit, but are the 002's still good? How many simultaneous tracks can they record into PT? Enough for a full drum kit? Thanks!

About a year ago, I read a lot of reviews where people prefered the 002 over the 003, cuz there weren't sufficient upgrades to anything really...

That is just what I was reading, and have no input of my own cuz I don't use protools.

Well that sounds good to me. It's going like crazy cheap. There's a mixer/recorder unit with PT and a bunch of waves plug-ins for $550. Hopefully this is a common trend with these now that the 003 is out.

I've had an 002 rack since they came out. It has worked flawlessy since I got it. You can record 8 tracks at the same time - you can get an 8 channel preamp with a lightpipe and be able to record 16 tracks. Make sure the computer you get is compatible. I had a buddy help me put mine together and we went over the specs very carefully and made sure each component was what was needed - I've had sessions with 32 tracks and plenty of plugins and it was working good even with that load. I will say the preamps on the 002 are crap. I use the pre's from a little Mackie board and even those sound way better than the Digi preamps.

dstroud is on the money. The preamps are horrible. Period.

If you're looking for a great all in one interface for Pro Tools, go Profire 2626. Any other DAW, an RME product will annihilate.

yeah, the pre's are terrible, I did notice for some reason they sound better when run on v8, which is actually pretty good compaired to the early versions of P-T lite. You can upgrade an early version for 150 bucks on Avid's sight.
I dont use the pre's in the 002, but once on v8, I've been suprised at how much better it was as far as the system as a whole, its much more stable when running the UAD plug-ins, the midi platform is much better, the newer factory plug ins kill the older ones, and above all, it sounds much better. I did not expect it to sound any different when using the same 002 I had before, Avid says all the algorithm's have been changed within the program to achieve it. I was very skepticle until I heard it. I was going to switch to Logic, but I figured I could take a chance on the v8 upgrade for that much coin and have since decided to stick with it for awhile, its that much better.
Darron is right about checking the system req's for compatability, I had to upgrade my mac to snow leapord to be able to upgrade the P-T program to v8, but it was well worth it.

If you are looking for a compatible computer for Pro Tools and If you are going the pc route you can pick up an IBM T60 and get a firewire PCMCIA card or get a T61 with the firewire interface built in. The S3 chipset for the audio devices that are in these laptops are really good for recording and you should be able to find them for a resonable price on ebay.

I believe the improved the AD/DA on the 003 models. I have an 002 that has worked flawlessly for years. I bypass the AD as much as possible using an external adat conversion which also add more mic pre's. The preamps on the 002 are just ok. I mean they are about the same as a cheap focusrite or cheap other mic pre. But thats about it. They are a bit hot, and its hard to record loud percussive instruments using the stock preamps.
