Who would you have mod your Marshall?

If you're set on keeping the amp and having it modded, you'll be best served by deciding exactly what you're looking to have changed and then finding out who/where this can be best achieved. If the amp isn't giving what you want and you're blindly going the "mod" route, I'd suggest a different approach (either figure out what you want modded, or find a different amp).

I Would go with somebody close to me. Here on the west cost, we have a few good guys. I personally would go with Dave Friedman. I have heard 2 of his mods personally and they sound great. He also turns them amps around pretty quick.

There are just SO MANY good "modders" that it's almost impossible to choose if you don't know exactly what you want.

You can "kinda" get a clue by listening to the clips of guys who've had the mods done ....

Good Luck !

I've heard so many conflicting opinions regarding various, highly-regarded "modders".

If I had one chance, and one choice with one amp, it would be

Bruce Egnater

That's what I've done with my JMP... no complaints here.

It's worked for SOOOOO many people we grew up listening to. Why mess with perfection? LOL! :D

What aren't you getting out of the amp that you want more of, Kent? That's really gonna help with thw suggestions. I don't know if John Suhr still does mods, but the tones that Reb Beech and Doug Aldrich got from the Suhr modded heads sounded killer to me.

The story is that I just got Brett (my other guitarist) a JVM and it sounds great for what he's doing which is mainly rhythm. I've spent some time with it and it sounds really great but I would like it to be a little less harsh on top and have a more singing lead quality if possible. I LOVE the mid voicing. I can get the amp at a really low price and it is about 80% there. It may even be there now if I spent a bit more time with it but I have a feeling for what I want it to do it would benefit from a better transformer and a little tweak in the high end to take some of the buzziness out of it.

One of Doug's Marshalls IS a Cameron. The other was modded by John Suhr. He talks about it on the Whitesnake 2005 DVD. Infact, he mentions the Suhr mod, but not the Cameron. Not sure why. At any rate....

This is the issue with Marshalls for me as well. They are 80 to 90% there. It's that last 10% that cost you out the nose to get...lol. I'd talk to Egnater. However, for what you are going to pay for the amp plus the mod, you might be better off just finding exactly what you're looking for in an amp that doesn't need to be modded. Just my opinion.

Friedman is amazing with Marshalls. He did 2 amps for me. I don't think Cameron is modding anymore, I think he's focusing in his amp company. Don't know Fortin.
