Looking for a good representation of these things in a chunky Les Paul in a clean and high gain setting. Getting close to ordering a set for a build, but I'm torn between the Dogs and Riff Raff at the moment.

Thanks!

I don't think you'll be able to hear how a pickup sounds in a clip. Unless it's a direct A/B/C comparison so you can hear the subtle differences back to back.

But think of the Black Dog as a supped up PAF. Thick mid range. Not the tightest pickup out there. Very clear. Has a certain something to how it sounds/feels. Riff Raffs are going to be much brighter. Much much brighter.

Thin of it this way:

BD = Zeppelin
RR = AC/DC

Not really. But sort of. :lol: :LOL:

MmMmm.. Dig me some Zep. I've heard the Riff Raff is more Zeppelin territory though, as odd as that seems.

I don't really have any clean clips but...

Here's a pickup comparison I did a while back. I really like the Black Dog.

Check out my YouTube channel as well. I use my Tremonti loaded with a Black Dog in almost all my videos.

Was that your bridge position?? That was incredibly thick. Liked your sound click files, too. Detroiter was ball'n. Thanks for sharing!!

If you are going with BK, you really need to special order un-or very lightly potted versions IME. had the RR and the BD std potted versions and loathed them. Choked sustain like I've never experienced. Ended up with an unpotted Mule/RR set that were pretty good. Then I flipped over to WCR and haven't looked back, but that's another discussion

Maybe some could, but the idea of me trying to dip a $500 set of pickups in hot wax makes me cringe a bit :D I really never had any squeal issues with the unpotted versions--at the time I was playing JMPs pretty much cranked
