Why are KT88s becoming so popular now?

can't wait for the 6aq5 explosion. finally will be some low watt amps worth a damn

6AQ5, LOL.
I'd prefer to use a 6DL5, although 6GW8 is cool in that it's got a triode built right in so you could actually design an amp using one tube for about 4 watts.

As for KT88, my first guitar amp build/design had a pair and I'm pretty sure Jimi Hendrix used them as well. The 200watt Marshall had them and so did some Sunn amps and the second version of the SVT(Although it's close cousin the 6550 maybe more common). Besides being loud as hell the main feature I'd say would be that it takes a bit more to make them distort, and even then they tend to be tight.

It was recorded on the fly with a Tascam DR100. SM57 on the left, E906 on the right. DD7 on my board for the loop. No processing whatsoever.
