Is there a reason why Mike Soldano didn’t use Celestion Greenbacks speakers in the Soldano 4x12 cabinets

Cheaper than renting that time machine to get american made tubes lol.
If Peavey and Mesa could still offer Sylvania 6L6s in the early 90s, why not Soldano as well, considering they produced far fewer amps?

While supporting Russia by using Sovtek 5881s. I think Gorbachev brokered the deal
The SLO was originally designed with the Philips 7581A. They swapped over to the Sovteks because Philips stopped production in 1988. Mesa and Peavey were bigger companies and had bought up a lot of stock. They eventually ran out as well.

There was a while in the 90’s where getting Celestions for a smaller maker was not easy (I forget why) and a few makers had to switch to Eminence or at least have Eminence make them a speaker to their specifications. I always thought SLO’s were not for me because for years I heard them through those shit Legend speakers. Same with the P50 from VHT/Fryette. Horrible for the midrange. Once I heard a SLO through a greenback cab, my whole perception of the amp changed for the better.

I stand corrected. It was Boris Yeltsin then who got Mike to switch to Sovteks.

Eddie did use a combination of Celestion greenbacks and JBL d120 speakers to achieve the Van Halen 1 sound that high end sizzle came from the jbl d120 speakers so I think that the Celestion vintage 30 would be a good chose to get that bright high end sizzle so the Celestion vintage 30 would be a more flexible chose. I think Mike Soldano made that chose for that flexibility

you've brought up v30s and VH1 a few times now, v30s are not the speaker to sound like vh1 :dunno:

Reread my my last post I said it would a good chose( Celestion vintage 30) to add that high end sizzle brightness that the JBL d120 added to the Van Halen 1 sound when they recorded the album

I would think that a T75 would be a better fit than V30 for that. In fact, I believe Ed used 75s with the SLO on FUCK.

Yup. GB's & V30's were an option. I have a late 90's boa 2x12 closed back that still has its original V30's in it (~30 yrs of break-in; sounds GREAT).

V30’s bring far more mid honk then high end sizzle.
An old scooped T75 would mimic a D120 better than a V30

I was never a fan of the V30. The Greenback, and all its variants, is my favorite. I even like the H mag more than the V30.
