There's a grey, and a red frame. Grey sounds a touch warmer; but very close to the red.

Altec 417 are more midrangey than celestions but has the aluminum dust cap sparkle that reminds me of the JBL top end. if you can tame that raspy brightness when distorting (boogie marks have the auto GEQ to enable on your lead tone) then maybe…?

i have WGS speakers (invader 50/ET 65s) in my mahalo cab and they seem to have celestion core sounds with an added brightness so maybe one of their speakers ..?

Around 2009 I found and bought two mint original cones Fender JBL D120-F's both 16 ohm which was rare in a 1982B cabinet with two 6402 Celestion greenbacks and I did not find any Ed magic in the JBL D120-F's that I had.

I happily sold them for more than I paid and moved on from the JBLD120 lore. Yeah, they may have been mic'd and mixed in with the greenbacks/blackbacks in the studio for VH1 but aside from that I highly doubt they were Ed's favorite speaker.

If you really have to hear it for yourself the only modern speaker that comes close to the JBL is Weber's California or find yourself an original JBLD120F.

No, I don't think there is any speaker that combine characteristics of the Celestion and JBL. IMHO something like that would be a hot mess.

Altecs are super expensive used though..I missed out on a pair for 500 cad years ago. This combo would be popular if someone could create a speaker with that signature.. or reissue the altecs!

I’ve been listening going back and forth between the celestion vintage 30 and the celestion greenbacks and I’m really liking the vintage 30.Like I’ve said many times just use your ears and the heck what you read in articles what guitar players use

For rich midrange paired with cast frame thump and clarity minus the lazer beam high-end of an aluminum dust cap the alnico SRO is imo the best speaker ever made. Every amp I have ever put them through sounds better through them than any other of the considerable number of speakers I've had. A close runner up are the old Pulsonic cone 20-25 watt late '60s-'70s Fanes, and Fane Purples which again have cast frames.

The ceramic SRO is pretty damn good too, but the sweet alnico midrange and treble of the alnico is just perfect for me.

Sounds like me. It depends a lot on the amp head you are using. I prefer the feel of the V30 over the GB, but GBs have a very nice balanced tone. GB's do have a more vintage bottom end. I'm going back to V30s once they arrive in the mail.

The celestion vintage 30 has that brightness edge aggressiveness that I hear on Van Halen 1. I’ve been using celestion greenbacks for ages never trying a different speaker because thats what Eddie used well like I said use your ears and the hell what you read in articles/magazines/internet. Now for the Van Halen II sound greenbacks are fine but for women and children first and Fair Warning I really like what I ear with the celestion vintage 30.
