Whenever the name Bob Rock is mentioned around Metallica fans, they seem to go ape shit. Why exactly? All I know about it is that Bob Rock was Metallica's producer or something. I think he worked with them on the Black and Garage albums, but those were good albums, so what was the problem?

I'm a big Metallica fan and happen to think he's made all of Metallica's best sounding albums (sans St. Anger).

because they're the "true" fans

I think its because his name is associated with their change in sound and the fact he worked with "hair" bands. I love the sound he gets on 95% of the albums I have heard that he produced. St Anger and Subhuman Race are the 2 notable exceptions

I personally hate Steven Wilson because I link him to the fact Opeth started to suck once he got involved :D

I didn't know fans hated him. I'm a fan and love the sound of the albums he recorded

Metallica was Metallica when they had Cliff and Flemming Rasmussen.
After that.... the band was gone.

I'm not getting sucked into this one. This is like I'm holding a couch and Buffalo Bill wants me to step up into the van. You guys are on your own..... - Clarise Starling

Come on, they seem like nice enough fellows. It's just a conversation.

Because Bob helped them become a other crap pop band. Before him they played metal.

I'm a fan of the Black album, in fact I wish he would have produced AJFA, Do I lose my metal card now?

The main thing I hold him responsible for is changing James's voice into that shit show that took him 20 years to start shaking off. James did not need to become a "singer". What he was doing was perfect. I personally have nothing against the sound of the Black album or what he produced. Hell, Dr Feelgood is a sonic masterpiece. It all depends on how much influence he had on the material and arrangements. That is what sucks.

Because he isn't Bob Metal?

He produces great sounding albums. Black album sounded great, but was the right turn indicator of the hard rock they were to become. Just my opinion.

This, and what Corpse said. They stopped being the fast thrash metal band they were and turned into radio rock.

No hate on em, do what you want, but what I liked to listen to regarding them wasn't there anymore and never came back.

Dr. Feelgood has held up so damn well over the years, it's incredible.

Exactly.... I lost faith in Metallica personally after Master. It was obvious to me the band was changing. I like Bob and some of the music Metallica did after Master. James singing on the Black album was the biggest change.

But Bob had nothing to do with changing James's voice?? James wanted it to sound like it did on Black then James blew his voice out touring for a solid 2+ years during the Black album. After that is was either change or permanent damage. IMO his current live vocals sound better than they have in ages.

Also James and Lars rough wrote most of Load and Reload in Lars's basement before they even went into the studio with Bob. He had very little influence on the direction they wanted to go. Bob just helped them polish what they had rough wrote.

IMO their ability to write what they feel and want at a certain time is why they are still around today. They have no genre, they can do it all. IMO that is what music is all about. I personally could care less about making certain genre music just for the sake of being a certain genre. All their music is fairly heavy. It's just done in different ways from album to album.

Metallica fans hate Bob Rock because they think he tried to become the bassist for Metallica, and didn't want it. They are literally like high school girls who see their ex-boyfriend with a new girl and hate her cause she ain't her.
