Why don't some people take care of their gear?

I think it is safe to say that most of us work hard to make money.
So if you buy an instrument, that costs a lot of money, why would you not take care of it?

I so often see guitars that have been destroyed, and I have to wonder, were they gifts, or just bought by careless idiots with a lack of education or care?
IF they are professional people, such as a guitarist on tour, it makes sense that their gear may get damaged, from the rigors of the road and such.

But for the 90% rest of the people out there, I just don't get it...

And then, to pass it off as perfect condition stuff when they try to sell...
I don't know how many times I've worked up a deal, only to arrive to a piece of sad lumber wood that is past its prime and been beat to hell.

Accidents can happen, but really...

Why don't some people have the ability to take care of their gear?

Many musicians feel the guitar is just a tool. Very dispensable. Like a carpenter doesn't polish his hammer every night (ok, bad example   )

Me? I take care of my stuff to the point where it's almost a problem.

I don't mind when I see guitars treated as tools and abused at giggs and such, but I don't like to see some privileged doosche trash his expensive guitar to try to seem cool. I dont like to see guitars broke on purpose when there are great programs out there that except gear donations such as jail guitar doors in which guitars are used to teach inmates music, and other programs to teach music in the inner city.

i take care of my stuff, but it gets beat up. a guitar is meant to be played, and will incur scratches, nicks, and everything else. i clean them up, oil the boards, adjust things as necessary, but i dont baby them when i play them.

of course, i only own 3 moderately expensive instruments, one of which is in sad need of new electronics and a refret (my PRS). everything else, including one of my main axes, is reasonably cheap. but i beat on them all the same!

however...if someone is going to sell something, they need to be upfront about the condition ya know? and that poor Edwards LP...ouch!

and i agree...people who just break guitars and such for no reason...douches. the lot of them.

That one pic is just scratches in the paint, what is wrong there?

+1. I take care of my stuff but also I don't baby it either. I'm not a museum trying to preserve history. The scratches on the back of that guitar wouldn't bother me at all. Normal wear and tear.

The one thing that always, and still does, bother me is with amps. That one thing is how the hell do you lose a damn footswitch or the power cable? Then, when they go to sell it, they do not even bother including a new power cable, yet claim it is guaranteed to be in working order.

Unfortunately , I have lost cables and footswitch before. At giggs with limited time set aside for each band means rushing to unhook your rig and clear stage all while the next band is hooking theirs up at same time. Mix in some beers etc and it's actually pretty common. Now selling an amp and not mentioning the missing stuff is just lame and no excuse for that behavior.

Maybe because they actually played it and didnt wipe it down with a diaper when they were finished

That pic is a collector's nightmare, harder to flip.

I take care of my gear but I had a head stock snap off once. The screw attaching the straplock button pulled out and down she went, landed just right to snap it clean off. The strap never came off the straplock though!!

My guitars are quite clean, and many men polish their hammers daily. Wait, what was this thread about again?

Fuck that, play it like you stole it and your crossing the border with cops in tow.
