why is my princeton reverb so fizzy compared to my twin rev?

I got the prri, based on my love of Mike Campbell and Ryan Adams, for the first time my drive pedals were actually pushing the amp, and sounding a lot more natural to me.

with that being said I even got a tone tubby speaker in it, and it still is spiky, too small sounding, and a nightmare (even though it introduced me to the blackface breakup tone which I am finding I enjoy.)

So while experimenting, my trri must have some older tubes, because mine will breakup at almost sane volumes, and if I go in the other room while playing to get away from the volume, I can appreciate it is the fender tone I am trying to get. Just enough breakup to rock and be pushed by my ocd, but easily clean with my strat.

For me it seems like it gets the Ryan Adams tone dead on with my hollowbody. He also used a twin back in the day and studio (and said the breakup was enough for him) so maybe I am not crazy?

So my questions to you guys

1. I am thinking of selling my prri, for some kind of attenuator/yellow jackets? To also fund a pedalboard

2. Is it uncommon for twin breakup to be pleasing (besides the volume) I just checked the back of the amp, and I don't think they are groove tubes in there...

I think from these videos you can definitely get a feeling of what is going on

both amps set for a similar sound, bass round 3 treble 5, keep my mids low, round three on the twin

I go through 6-10 of the volume knob, with an ocd kick in the for the hell of it.

the recording makes it sound better than it is in person..... but I can definitely here this weird fizz in the way the notes decay in the beginning of the princeton video...

that fizz in the beginning...

I find the PRRI sounds much better with a 12" speaker.

makes me think maybe I should just get a deluxe reverb instead

A few things...

If you like really like the Twin, then get rid of the PR and buy an attenuator. No amount of tweaks will ever make a PR sound, behave, or feel like a Twin. They're completely different amps.

As far as the fizz.....I'd suggest two things: run it into a 12" speaker cab and see if that helps. Check/change your tubes. Fender factory tubes are some of the worst ever made, IMO.

I have a Princeton Reverb & I agree with this. I built an open back 1x12 with a Weber, & I like it.

I really think its mainly the speaker.

The PRRR has less fizz/harshness than the DRRI, imo.
You can do the 'bright cap clip' mod on the DRRI, but even after that most people have changed the stock speaker.

I'd suggest keeping the PRRI, getting a new baffle from Mojotone and sticking in a 12" speaker.
It's heavenly!

yeah I am aware of the bright cap and how it can suck with drive pedals, but doesn't it stop working if you have the volume up loud? I would be using it on 7-10 all the time

I think it does....i didn't spend much time with the DRRI since I much prefer the PRRI. ;)

Hey Jonny, what speaker(s) do you run with your SR?

And when are we playing Gears again? I saw you and Drew were around last night, but I was pretty tired.

I'm loving the stock ones....I play the SR at breakup levels most of the time and the speakers are breaking in nicely.
It's a pleasant surprise.
