Why the f**k didn't you guys tell me...

My buddy Tony Luna is their monitor engineer, so trust me, they're all really playing. The entire band is on in-ears, so no wedges.

And yes, each guitar tech triggers presets from a board under the stage.

+1

add in the extra talent, the wireless sytems, the million dollar sound system, and the great EQ.

to the OP - im sorry, but TSO is not new to guitar playing or playing on stage. it IS NOT fake and you have no proof otherwise to prove it. you have only seen them once and many other people here who have seen them many times before and many times more than you disagree with you. you had no backstage pass and only a stage view limited by laser lights and dim lighting.

am i saying they didnt use backing tracks? nope - they do use them. are all of the instruments fake? are the musicians gun-hires for looks? these questions are crossing the line. TSO =/= bieber and spears content.

Its possible that they just sounded that good. Its a killer show. In-ear monitors and all that. minimal stage volume

  I used to work with Tony

I believe you, it's just hard to believe this could have been production rather than the real deal... But it wouldn't surprise me. I think more and more, they're canning the live shows here and there to just maintain consistency and every so often, give the 'band' a night off, figuratively speaking of course.

I've seen a couple shows of varied performances where the plectrum of the guitar was about 2 inches from the strings, yet the solo was ringing out in full force on the PA. As well, I've seen the singers mouth retract back from the microphone prematurely, yet the sung note is there, hanging with full force and even a natural bit of throaty breakup (only to see the singer quickly resume his/her position to the mic but just that split second too late, when the sung note is actually no longer).

It's hard to prove this to people unless they're there. It's hard to prove it to people there if they're at all intoxicated

But for the record, I've seen this before, and knew something was fishy before, and I'm not saying TSO did or didn't perform when you saw them most recently, but I believe you that something was fishy :salute:

Best!

I am feeling like a huge cock right now even bringing this up. You guys are really making question what I saw/heard. Is it possible that the acoustics of where I was sitting was throwing off the timing somehow? My eyes were not jiving with the ears? I have seen some spot on concerts over the years that sounded identical to the albums. Queensryche on Operation mindcrime was one that comes to mind and more recently Opeth. You would swear it was recorded it was so freaking good. It was live and just hit you in the chest for a feel that is unmistakable.

Trying hard not to sound like a nutjob. I wrote my original post with a bit of anger. Not even anger, just a bit hostile. I feel what I saw to be true in my mind, but hey......dudes see UFO's all the time and they believe it to be true. :D

It's not fake and Im not exactly sure what you saw. I'm friends with Al Pitrelli and Joel Hoekstra. Joel has recently landed the TSO tour and I know for a fact that he busted his ass learning the songs and all the stage stage cues. Al also commented that he was doing Long rehearsals.
Im not saying that parts might be played to a backing track, as a lot of broadway type shows do this, but for the most part, I know they both play live.

Hope this helps

Right on Ralph. My friend David is the east coast bassist...they are playing.

I was only maybe 5 rows back when I saw them (expensive seats, but I was being treated by a family member and it was well wroth it!). I could throw a rock and ping any of them in the noggin if I was inclined, nothing seemed fishy to me, and it didn't seem strangely quiet, IMO. They have put so much time and millions of dollars to get where they are, and I really wouldn't be surprised if the engineers and techs they've brought onboard are really just that good at getting everything absolutely perfect. It's not the same thing as seeing Savatage or another rock band, TSO is entertainment of a completely different caliber, more comparable to Broadway than a rock concert.

light does travel faster than sound....perhaps the things that you saw got to you a little quicker than what you heard?

i realize that's reaching, especially since you were close to the stage, but the acoustics in the room could be a factor...

I saw them last year from backstage with Skunknik and the other guy who plays the Deans and they were most certinley playing

I just hope you didn't miss out on the experience by scrutinizing everything under a microscope. I saw them a few years ago....it was a tremendous show, they were loud, there was an occasional minor imperfection..... I'd go again in a heartbeat.

I've seen them the last 3 years in a row. Didn't notice anything fishy. But you never know.

Nah, I still had a great time with my family. Anytime away from work and being with them is a good thing. No matter what I said in the first post it was still a cool experience.

One possible scenario I was thinking about. What if they had technical difficulties after the first show? Would/could they resort to a pre recorded back up plan. Stranger things have happened.

Al Pitrelli has killer legato. When I saw them, he did a lot of fancy legato runs that to someone who doesn't know him or the technique would look fake. He did the same thing when I saw him with Megadeth.

A band of that magnitude could easily take a night off for serious technical reasons hidden from public knowledge. It's not like they want to fool everyone out there on a particular night, they just don't want to cancel the show.

I don't find it odd at all in a mainstream act that is tour heavy

Is this a live band full of incredible talent? Yes

Is it a possibility that the band used prerecorded material just this once or in other few shows of their entire career? Yes

I saw them 3 times, the last was about 3 years ago and they were amazing and were def all playing live.

When I saw him with megadeth he was all bluesy. It sucked. Worst lineup of megadeth ive ever seen.

I saw TSO last year with my wife and they were definitely playing live. Incredible show!!!!
