Reb's tone on this album is so cool - chunky with lots of definition. Not usually a fan on Winger, but this album rocks!

Anyone know what gear he was using for that album?

Mesa Recto and his signature Koa Suhr with EMGs I think...and probably A LOT of secret studio sauce.

Actually I'm pretty sure it was his Marshall Heads ( modified by John Suhr ) and a MESA ( possibly a Recto ) 4 x 12 Cabinet. It's the same gear he used in his homegrown instructional DVD .... Then shortly after that he converted to CAA OD-100SE+ ( which have now been modded to PT100 specifications ) ....

For Guitars ..., definitely his original Suhr Koa/Pau Ferro w/ EMG's !

I read an interview somewhere where he said it was Rectos 'cuz of their smooth distortion.

Yeah …, it appears that they both were used ? I lifted these quotes directly from Reb’s website:

1st Question ( he was referring to George Lynch ):

What gear did you use on the Winger albums to achieve your tone ?
Rectifiers have a very smooth distortion and pretty much just do one thing. I used one for ‘Pull’ and trust me – it wasn't the amp that made him sound like a demon.

2nd Question:

What kind of amps did you use in the studio for "Erase the Slate" and how are they live ?
I used my Bradshaw–modded Marshall ( the same amp I used on ‘Pull’ ) which sounds just like the Bradshaw head if you want to get the same tone. ‘Pull’ was the same sound mixed louder, so it sounded way better than 'Erase the Slate', which I think is a bass heavy mix ( bass eats up guitars ).

If someone really wanted to get my tone, I figure they would need $ 5,000. They could buy a Suhr and tell him to recreate my Pensa Suhr Koa guitar with EMG's, and then buy a Bradshaw head ( 2nd choice–Boogie Rectifier ), a Mesa Boogie 4x12 cab and the all-important Boss overdrive pedal.

I think you will find there is a lot less "secret sauce" on recordings in general than most people like to believe. If the rig is right, place the mics well and you have your sound most of the time
