I never liked Metallica's brand of rock. I remember my friend bringing their debut album over for a listen... I thought it was some kind of parody thing? To my ears, it was/is the musical equivalent of diarrhea. That been said, prayers for James. Absolutely.

For sure when your friend brought Kill Em All over for a listen, it was not in 1983? You would probably of had a different opinion. Just saying. Maybe I’m wrong.

But when i heard it in 83, it was unbeleivable and i was hooked to thrash instantly, still am to this day.

Jaymz was and still is a big influence on me. Of course i am partial to the first 4 albums.

Big time. And honestly - he may not be the best guitar player ever but best is also relative right? I'd rather listen to him riff then Kirk wank and wah. James defo influenced me more than Kirk too. No offence to Kirk or his followers.

First public appearance from James since entering rehab. Not sure that he spoke to it necessarily but based on the pictures from the event (car exhibit at a museum in Cali last night) he sure LOOKs healthy.

Way to go James - keep it up my man and keep on rockin'

PS: He's got some sweet cars too!

Yeah, got a couple tickets to go check these out at the Petersen.
Maybe, we'll go tomorrow.

No shit? That's frickin awesome. Would love to see/hear pics/stories

Well, I was 21 when I first heard Metallica. My bandmate was 3 years younger. My influences were LZ, BS, DP, Free, Rainbow, Kansas, Allman Bros, Lynyrd Skynyrd, UFO, etc... His main influence was KISS, where I hated KISS music. Odd, because I love Ace Frehley's [KISS] solo album.

To this day, there is precious little music that I enjoy; post 1979. I love what Randy Rhoads did with Lee Kerslake, and Bob Daisley. Queensryche's "Operaton Mindcrime" is a musical masterpiece, IMO. I still listen to some of the Seattle era rock. I don't think I own anything from the LA hair band days? I do have The Cult "Love", "Electric", and "Sonic Temple" in my collection.

Yeah, i also enjoy all the 70’s music very much. I am 47 and was 10 years old when i heard kill em all for the first time. I was hooked to that new fast and angry music. My dad could not understand it!!!! It was noise he said. The fast pentatonic leads Kirk putting out where amazing at the time, they still have a lot of character to this day. Pure raw and to the point.

Metallica changed my life as a teenager, made me take up guitar.

all the best to him... I wonder if he is actually being treated for his underlying mental health condition? hope so.

I have "Ride The Lightning" in my collection, so I don't dislike all of their music. IMO, the guitar tone on RTL is much better than their subsequent material.

Don’t tell me ‘google is friend’
:D
But what amps were used on Ride The Lightning?
I’ve read conflicting reports.

Marshall 2203 with pedals... Tubescreamer and RAT.

Still to me some of the legendary tones.
I blast that cd thru a really good loud system. And it just kills.
Almost sounded Mesa - ish
But to me that’s the tone.

Actually. I was thinking you would know for sure ;)

I am not an expert on this topic at all but yes, it was my understanding that it went something like this:

K'em All - Marshall 1959 SLP (both James and Kirk shared this for the recording)
RTL - Marshall JMP 2203
MoP - Mesa Mark IIC+ into Marshall power amp (JMP?)
AJFA - Mesa various preamps into Mesa Strategy 400 power amp
Black - Mesa Mark(s) IIC+ and IV into Mesa Strategy 400 power amp
and a mix and path to include Mesa Triaxis, Triple Rec's, Diezels, Marshalls, Wizards, Kranks,

:dunno:

Edit: I had the basics of that, but I DID have to look some of it up to fill the gaps.

When we jam I can dial in any 80s thrash.
The new gear is easy to dial in no push needed. :D

Makes a person wonder where Jaymz's stolen Hose Marshall is?

I prefer his playing to Kirk's IMO. Seems like a really cool guy too, more to me than kirk.

I hate when some people rag on some guitariats, as they are obviously more successful than I will ever likely be, but it's like they got known and stopped advancing. That is the only real beef I have.

They left a much more shallow technical footprint than a lot of other metal players. From EVH to Dime.

The first four albums are classic though. I love every bit. Honestly the production too.

ANJA is just cool from a melody standpoint and composition. But the style of the album is not my type.

I won't get into the black album. We all probably know where most of us stand on that.

Back to the point of the thread, conquering addiction for anyone is not easy and SHOULD be celebrated.

I hope papa Het stays on the right path.

That makes sense. I've owned a few Boogie amps... Mark I, IIC+, and V.

Just ran across this recent quote from James as well, from the car show. This is really good stuff. Not completely unknown, just cool to hear James explain it.

https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/ge ... y_met.html

James says in the middle part...

"In the '80s, in LA, guitar players, everyone was trying to be Eddie Van Halen, and there were millions of guitar players. Every band was looking for a singer: 'Singer needed.' 'Singer wanted.'

"So I sold my guitar, sold my amp and bought a PA and a mic, and I wanted to be a singer. That was the next goal.

"And then when I met Lars [Ulrich] again, I told him, 'Oh, I'm not playing guitar anymore. I'm just singing.' He was, like, 'Well, we'll look for a guitar player.' And then no one could play the guitar like we needed, so I [went back to playing] the guitar. 'We'll just look for a singer now.'

"And then no one could sing like [we wanted them to], so I [said], 'Okay, I'll sing until we find a singer.'
... "

James showed up the other night at an Eddie Money fund raiser for cancer event and played acoustic and sang 'Baby Hold On' by Mr. Money. Good stuff. I kinda welled up.

Yep... loved that he was out there raw and uncut doing something like this. Shows the passion is still there. Hoping for many more years of Hetfield riffs and music.
