Wizard MC vs MTL comparison

The MTL I had, did not like any boost. Sounded 'smaller' with one. MC, all day. 2010 version I had loved every boost pedal.
To me the trick has been running level at about noon and the tone knob about 11. I do agree though it makes it smaller. Thought I remember Matt talking about, and I know Nick swears by the koko boost with it.

the Koko boost is awesome with wizards. I use the mid boost side with the knob about 10-11:00. Lately Ive been using the Wizard Leopard, it’s pretty killer too… it adds a little more top end and cuts the bass slightly relative to the Koko.

Great vid man. Since getting an MTL I’ve been gassing for a MCII, but it sounds like I could probably get close with a boost, a nice bump in the mids, and save $4500. What say you, are they different enough to warrant both?

FWIW, the MTL and Hybrid I owned were similar to all the MCIIs I've owned but different. Similar in that they all have that sig Wiz thang going on (punch, raw openness, clarity, etc) , but the MCII has a different voicing (especially in the mids) and gain structure. There is a certain aggressive attack with the MCII you get that neither the 2019 MTL MKI nor 2021 Hybrid I owned could achieve. All being 100W with the V tranny. The MC25 is a spot on MCII only a tad more rough around the edges when comparing to the 100w and having owned a shit pile of Wizards, I could be 100% happy with just the MC25.

All that said...I'm still contemplating grabbing a 50w or 100w MTL MKII to fuck with.

Both sound great! Boosting the MC II pushes it in the same territory clearly. You are making me want to throw my SD-1 in front of my MC II now to boost it. I remember it working really well for that crazy fire breather level metal sound.

I think it holds its own without a boost fairly well even for thrash but totally get the allure of boosting for the more modern sound.

Great vid!

A boosted vs. unboosted MCII are two completely different animals IMHO. Boosted, the MCII turns into the most raging thrash inferno, even a brutal DM monster with the right boost/settings. It's one of those amps that just takes boosts like they're part of the circuit. Each boost adds a unique twist and the amp reacts to each and every boost so well which creates such an endless opportunity for tweaking. Same goes for the MC25.

I hear the boosted MC2 same as what i find on mine... it has an upper mid which its supposed to be sounding on the classic side.... suprisingly MC2 is less wide and open compares to the MTL here... but i do hear my MC2 having more "hair" abit buzzier side than my MTL and Hybrid...

But MTL here surprisingly a more "hair" more modern and it sound way huge compares to MC2 being more focused ...

MC here sounds cleaner suprisingly than MTL ... opposite to what i have on my arsernal

Renege boosted the mc2 and not the MTL2. Thst will definitely make the mc2 more focused like you said . I can do super tight focused modern metal with my mtl2 . But both are great . MTL2 is thick again person while being with boost

On shift but I’ll get together a boosted mtl clip to hear too.

@Bram576 ya clips are great !!! The MC boosted on yours sound killer !! Much cleaner than MTL... but i hear my MC2 with boost engaged it has a buzzier topend compares to my hybrid and MTL mk2....

Maybe that "hair" or "buzz" is what its supposed to be being a classic.... i definately hear more dark low mids on my MTL mk2 than MC2 and Hybrid...

Maybe ya got ya treble settings bumped up that contributed to the "hair" but thats just me we all have different taste buds lol

I like your boosted MC clip than the MTL !!! (Probably due to different tone settings on ya MTL)
Care to share ya MC preamp and power tubes? And what boost ya engaged with? Ya MC is focused and very very clean !! Nice sweet mids !

@Bram576 Dude the Wizard comparison video was great!

How much work was that 808 doing to the Modern Classic? Seems like the MC was hugely low end filtered and mid boosted, which is exactly what the 808 would do. How does the non-boosted MC compare to the non-boosted MTL?

Isn't the MTL just an MCII with an extra gain stage? I imagine the right boost/EQ could get you there.

So far I like my MTL MKII EL 34 a lot. I do believe it's a dark amp tho. I need to have the bright level at about 8 or sth and the dial the presence almost at 9 to make it sound aggressive. Have zero experience with other models. Mine loves boosts with low gain settings / no drive or really low drive settings / level tone at 3:00

Yeah, wizards can be dark or bright. Use your ears to dial the presence. I always have the bright at 3:00, treble and mid sweep at 1-3:00 and presence at 3:00 or more

Thanks man! I’ll get an additional 2 videos going. Non boosted MC, and boosted MTL. I actually don’t push my tube screamers as hard as a lot of others. I see a lot of guys run the level all the way up… I tend to keep drive at 0. And tone 11-12, and level 11-1. I think it helps keep the character of the amp a bit while still making it nasty.

The non boosted MC still has the more grindy high end, and less ass. It still does sound killer; it’s just not my thing for what I play when it’s not boosted. I get why people say it’s not a metal amp… but when you put a boost in front of it, I think it disproves that point.
