They are amazing. The only reason I sold mine...the mids. I just didn't gel with the mids on the MTL. If they sat like a Marshall I'd still have it. I think the MCII is more my thing.
And that 50w was as loud as just about any 100w amp other than an SLO or 2203...more like 80w.

The Wizard amps handle 90% of everything from classic rock, classic metal to '80s metal, to most all prog/power/death metal. Amon Amarth, CoB, Arch Enemy, old InFlames is about as heavy as I get. I play mostly classic & power metal.

An EQ in the loop will help it handle the remaining 10%. I just got a Mesa 5-band EQ at the recommendation of a friend and it's pretty awesome.

Yeah... forgot about that. I have the Mesa 5-band eq pedal (awesome pedal btw) and it kills in the loop of my VH4. Does exactly what you mention. Time to try it with the MTL.

Get the MC2. It’s exactly what you ask for. (Speaking about the 2017 versions)

I couldn't get the WizardMTL3 track to play for me but otherwise the Wizard MTL has just moved up a few notches from the "I want" camp to the "I need" camp lol. I think my next amp purchase is a toss up between the MTL and a KSR. Thanks for the gas brother!
Man talk about 1st World Problems! LOL!

The Wizard mids are weird. Why am I going to put an EQ in the loop to remove it when it costs $5000.

Well built yes. Best amp ever? No.

Nobody said it needs an EQ in the loop. I just said you can use an EQ to get the 10% of tones it can get ....i.e. the extreme metal tones they were talking about.

There is nothing "weird" about the mids. lol

Why put an EQ in the loop?.....You could ask the same question about putting a delay or reverb in the loop. Answer would be no different

Best amp ever is subjective. One man's gold is another man's garbage.

For "extreme metal" there are other amps. Which is why I also own a Diezel Herbert and Engl SE... these would be my first two picks for anything heavier than your average garden variety death metal tones... black... ultra-black... pick one.

Pedals: I've had great success with both my Majik Box Rocket Fuel & Keeley Red Dirt. Both sound great pushing the MTL with the gain on the amp back a bit.

Competition: I've owned a lot of amps... and pretty much every variety of Marshall and modified variants... and I'd pick the MTL over any Cameron (Jose/Ocean/Aldrich)... Friedman BallBuster100... Soldano SLO... or stock Marshall with pedal. The tone stays tight, focused and articulate with any amount of gain or volume... the competition does not.

Also these amps are built very, very nicely. They are point to point wired by one person on a turret board by the man himself. The work is not farmed out to who knows who using a soldering iron with a kit amp and some pc boards. And play tested by the same person.

Bottom line: These amps do kill. The real deal.

Ok ya reeled me back in when you said Amon Amarth and Arch Enemy   I'm guessing the MTL would be good for thrashy stuff too? I don't know, I've been considering a Wizard but the Herbert has been haunting me lately. It just has that fun to play saggy compressed thing going on which is why I moved the one I had, but I'm now at the point I miss that attribute.

I keep reading that while the Wizard stuff is very open and un-compressed, many praise it for being easy/fun to play. That's what I'm after in the next amp. Kinda like my ARES in the sense it can get really tight and fast tracking (Especially with an od) but it remains easy and fun to play. Its not stiff; you don't have to fight it. That's why I'm thinking of picking up a Herbert again.

Plenty thrashy. :)

The MTL is at the opposite end of the tone spectrum of your Ares if that makes sense. Tighter, quicker, slicker, faster, more cutting. It's plenty easy/fun for me to play. No fighting required. :D It gets plenty heavy for me too... and I've got some serious "heavy" competition for it: Herbert, SE, Gemini, Triple Recto... and it can definitely hang just fine. Was chugging away on the Gemini today for comparison. It has a lot of useable gain... I only had the gain at about 1:00 in the clips... so there is plenty more on tap if needed... and the bass was only around 11:00... just to give you an idea. You'd dig it Mike... zero worries.

I will be honest. I don't think it sounds very good. I think it's the mic. I hate the audix i5. Use a SM57, reduce the presence and treble some...you can tell it sounds good.

That's quite close to what my Mesa/Boogie MarkIV sounds like.

I run it on Mid Gain & Pentode, with two 6L6s and two EL34s in SimulClass power mode.
