I fisrt time i lost hearing for two days was in 1980' because of Black Sabbath & Sammy Hager.

The second time was touring in 89' i ruptured an eardrum standing close to a 10 piece Double Bass set of Pearl drums & my Marshall JMP dimed.

My hearing has come back but i gotta be careful.

I rinse my ears couple times a week in the shower.

Whenever I see pics of Toni from this time period, I cant help but think of the coke that was running through him.

Look at him here, If you read his book, Iron Man, he tells of his party days and this pic was right out of that storyline.
Sorry to go off topic, but this pic.. DAMM

Quite a story Mike. Glad it turned out ok. All the guys saying peroxide and various ways of doing this on your own at home, no way. Some of us get excessive buildup and there isn't anything you can do but see a Dr. and get this procedure done. It's a life changing experience how good you can hear when you leave the office! Time to turn the presence knob down !!!!

How bad was your hearing loss, almost total?
In 1980' i had Tinnitus really bad for 2 days but it came back on the third day. In 89' i lost most of my right ear for over a month, it was like it was full of water and i couldn't hear but there was no water if that made sense. I moved to Florida and worked Construction. about a year later i had to take a Physical for a job the Doc ask me about aches & pains i told him about my ear. He looked inside and said my right eardrum had been ruptured but it scarred over.
I play way too loud than i should but am careful to keep SPL's below the waist.

I can feel the leg hairs moving on my legs when i play ... i have earplugs but hardly use them.

I'll tell you almost every show i go to at a big venue i bring plugs because its annoyingly loud in a bad way.

I think sound systems nowdays have way to much harsh midrange and its annoying.

The PA's back in the day sounded way better.

I think that the buildup actaully protects my eardrums. If I have it cleaned out I really will be deaf. :D

its crazy huh? when I woke and was partially deaf, the last thing in my mind was the possibility that it could be ear wax. I get out of the shower, and use q tips, every day, maybe miss a day every once in a while. But because of that, it was the last thing I thought it could be. Imagine suffering major hearing loss as a musician. Boy, that would be a bummer. when did it happen to you? so you know what I mean about how much hearing it takes away, yeah?

Guess its time to clean my ear wax this week! LOL

Peroxide and water, yeah, no way that would have worked on me, not a chance in hell. They were blasting away for 2 or 3 full minutes in my left ear. I know it wasn't just water they used, there was a couple things leading up to the turkey baster. It was hard pressure to the point that it actually hurt when it hit the skin around the ear. Maybe if you knew you had this problem, and started doing it like once week as a preventative measure, but it would not have worked for me, no way.

I like the guy above who uses alcohol and a flaming ice pick!!!!! That's hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!

In all seriousness I can relate. I've been really bad about it but as I'm getting older… almost 40 I should be taking the turkey blaster to my ears at least once a month with warm water.

Man what a story.

First of all, the nurse should be fired. WTF was she thinking?

Can you only imagine if you were like most people and just said ok and let her blast away in your ear? You probably WOULD be deaf (but maybe also very wealthy after a lawsuit?)

G

TL;DR - Tone is all in the ear wax.

    you are kidding right? It is called a Lavage or something like that. More recently they just call it "Ear irrigation"

no man, I am not kidding, but it wasn't one of those giant ones that have to be wheeled around. I will find a picture of one like it and attach it. I think you guys are getting the wrong idea. Maybe I was exaggerating a little when I said it would have torn pieces of my scalp off, but it was pretty serious pressure and it would have sucked real bad. It was similar to this picture attached, but man, this thing really roared to life. And believe me, it could pump out water with a rare ferocity. No doubt, it would have blown my ear drum out like it wasn't even there. Look at the picture, its similar to that. probably like 14 x 8 x 10 maybe? trust me, if that thing was hooked up and you guys heard it, saw water coming spraying out of it, you would have reacted the same way.

My earwax build up get really gnarly, I do the home method but usually end up getting it done professionally.

I had this done once when I was a young man.
I remember it feeling quite pleasurable.

Seriously, try the peroxide/water mix at home. Make a solution with 50% hydrogen peroxide and 50% water. Make sure the water is lukewarm, so that the temperature feels neutral on the inside of your wrist. Then lay down with your head on its side so one ear is facing straight up. Use a bulb to fill that ear with the solution and keep it in while staying in that position for 5 minutes. Repeat for the other side. Works really well! You will hear and feel continuous bubbling inside your ear as the peroxide eats away at the wax. Disgusting, but very effective for hearing well.

it is truly a miracle i have the hearing i still have.
been riding waves and mostly shorebreak since i was 3, played electric guitar since 14, ran concert sound since 86, and filmed hunting shows with shotguns and rifles going off next to me since 94, and now frequent construction sites for a new job.

that is an inordinate amount of factors agianst me! last time i tested a few years back my highs are rolled off to about 11k on my right side and lows are high passed to about 100 or so on the left. i have mild constant ringing which comes and goes.

worst ear injury?
got pitched over the falls on a hollow wave surfing in high school and landed on the right side of my head--water shot into my right ear and out my mouth.
the pain was uncool. lost my equilibrium ala vertigo--try that mumu on for size in roaring surf--and even talking about it now i can still remeber the sharp sensation of something foreign being in a place in my head which was very unwelcomed.
the earwax removal kits over the counter are hit and miss for me but one of the best changes imo has been moving from california cold water to hawaii warm. almost never have eardrum pain like before and my ears drain better than they have for the last 20 years. but aft a few consecutive days of shorebreak barrels my ears are waterlogged for a couple of days.

worst concert hearing loss?
ted nugent 22 row dead center in hawaii. 2 days of nothing but ringing and making out people speaking like my ears were covered with pillows.

and i agree about many modern PAs sounding harsh but much of that is operator error now that the ipod generation is at the helm.

surfing in California can be really cold, and when that water hits your head and gets in your ears, damn watch out, you can get ice cream head aches. when I moved back to northern California, I didn't even bother to get in the water again, you have to be a die hard surfer. the water gets SO COLD around san fran. plus, the great whites cruise the area frequently. you must be loving surfing Hawaii. One summer in san diego the water got up to about 76, and it was awesome you can wear trunks only and have a blast. a lot of surfers develop ear problems.

I had this done a few months ago. I seriously doubt a nurse thought a pressure washer for cleaning walls and floors was an ear irrigator. I don't believe that at all. Not one bit. And if that's what happened that nurse was surely fired.

As far as the ear wax, I get a lot of build up. Doc put some kinda oil in my ear to dissolve the wax, than sucked it all out with some kinda device. Felt kinda weird, kinda good. But it did the trick. Took about 2 minutes.

Yeah hopefully she was just messing with him.

Either way that is messed up

Glad your hearing is not gone mooncobra.

Lol, I read the first three lines and right away new it was ear wax. Had this my whole life. Watch out for those blasters, they can do damage to your ear drum. Next time, use an oil or solution that breaks down ear wax for 3 days THEN go in. It will loosen it up. Never use Q tips they compact it more. Suction of your finger from time to time gets it out better as gross as that sounds. And yes, this should be off topic.

I have to try this. My hearing in my left ear is about 30% less than my right. I know this because I noticed the issue and went to a doctor. He put me through some tests and asked me what trauma I'd suffered to cause the 30% loss. I told him, I don't know what you mean. I have been aware of this issue for a few years when I watch TV at night. When I roll over on to my right ear, I can't hear as well.

He was convinced there must have been some catastrophic event and suggested that I go get exploratory surgery to see what was wrong. He never once suggested irrigation.

I'm going to try it right away.

Dave
