I own a USA peavey wolfgang, and love it. Have often times though of getting another. Matter of fact just bought, and returned a Evh (MIC) wolfgang, frets were smooth but small, and neck was scary thin, so I passed. I digress.

Have been reading a bit about the peavey hp's....supposedly better thAn the peavey WG.....?, and they look damn nice! Can anyone confirm they are as good as or better ? Is there a fair comp to the old USA PV WG's other than the HP's?

Thanks for any help and feedback.

I've owned many Peavey Wolfgang USA standards & I love 'em.......I also own an awesome HP carved top & it's a great guitar as well.

You need to own both of them. Can't go wrong.........just make sure they're the carved top version!

I have the HP Peavey moon burst great guitar ,the only think i don't love is the pickup ,I find it a little week compared to a PRS ,or My duncan Custom.
I also tend to prefer a 24 fret

I like the HP special carve top; lotta bang for the buck, used.

If I could find a nice one, I'd snatch it up, just to have one laying around.

I am a big HP fan:

I actually owned this red Wolf 1st:

I picked up the Black HP and loved the revisions, sold the Wolf to get the Cherryburst...then came the Margherita, then recently the Moonburst, lol
That being said, I do miss my red Wolf a bit from time to time, so if I ever get cash I may need another if I can find it. As said by another we may need both

The main body of the red wolf was about the same width as the black hp PLUS it had that carved top extra, making a ticker body. I actually thought my next 3 carved top HPs would be similar to the Wolf, but they are all the same width as the black HP, thus they are skinnier + the top making them all equal. The HP necks are a bit faster, but really the playing differences are minute. The HP has the split coil option and the toggle down by the volume pot. The Wolf pickups seemed to go into overdrive at 10, and even though II am a gainhead, I often played with the volume on 9. The HP pickups sound in the ballpark of the Wolfs, making them awesome for rock, but not tight enough for modern aggressive metal. I'll probably keep a couple HPs stock and grab a Bare Knuckle Juggernaut set for the black real soon.

There is a cut out behind the bar on HPs for pull up tremolo action, with a tremolo block that you can engage if you want to allow dives only. My cherry has an upgraded brass block and is set for dive only with a DTuna and it sounds super thick and sustains for days. Probably too thick for the stock pu, so this will get moved back to the stock block or receive BKs at some point.

Overall awesome neck to play and often incredible flame/bird eye.

BK Juggernaut (zebra) ordered! Probably will go in the black one...

They are sexy beasts! The blue one is really eye catching. My wolf looks a lot like the red one you had.

Are the frets similar, size wise, to the wolf.

I'm not sure if the frets are the same, but they seem close if not identical. IDK, it's been a couple years since I had the Wolf. They are medium jumbo on the HP. The newer EVH Wolfs are small frets which was the one thing that keep sme away from them.
Here's a site to peruse for lots of cool Wolf HP info:

I own two. Neither are the carved top, but I have the tobacco burst and dark cherry HP Specials. Great axes, hence why i have 2. They stay in tune, and have big ass brass blocks. A little less baseball bat feel than the wolfies. not as round. I use the term block for dive only, so no floating. Great guitars.

Yea, I agree, the vintage frets on the new Wolfie were a bit small after playing the Pv for some time now.

You have photos you'd like to share? Would really love to some close ups of the frets and finish and....well you know, typical sexy T and A shots!

And yea, some closeups of that blue beauty would be awesome. I'm Gassing guys. Badly!

Yes...I'm actually watching that in reverb now and the other as well. Beautiful guitars.

I'm headed to the big city Thursday   I'm hopeful GC for Sam ash has a used one I might be able to handle.

They're all very nice but that blue is just off the hook for me! Thanks for posting the pics....I'm envious.

I had a Wolf that I really liked. It played awesome, and I really like the stock pickups a lot. I played an HP and liked the Wolfie better for sure. Granted, I only played one, but it seemed lighter, didn't play as good, feel as good, or sound as good as the Wolfie. But, that is just one HP.

HPs are nice guitars. I am partial to the flat tops though. I owned two of them and am thinking about buying one of them back.

You can get a used flat top HP for about $700 to $800. That's crazy considering the quality you get. I actually prefer the HP to the Wolfgang. IMO it looks better with the double cut away body. Plus it has the coil taps.

^Talk to me about your flattop love; I never actually played a FT HP

I know most guys prefer the carved tops, but I always prefer a flat top, especially on the HPs. I just think they look cooler that way.

If you play enough HPs, you might notice that there is some variation on the size of the finger boards used on these guitars. The neck profiles are all the same, but there was a batch made that seem to have larger finger boards. My cherry burst HP and tobacco burst HP were definitely different in that respect.
