Wooshing sound coming from my amp.

I go away for 5 days and come back and this happens. =/ Horrible wooshing sound when I turn my amp off standby and a pop when I turn it off.

What's causing this? Tubes?

Yup... Bum tube... Hard to tell if it's preamp or power amp sometimes though. I've had similar symptoms and replaced the preamp tubes and the wooshing continued until I retubed the whole amp.

I doubt it. You could always try the pencil test and see if you can find the culprit.

Pencil/rubber hammer test? Are these tubes microphonic? I thought a microphonic tube makes a high pitched whining sound?

You are correct, but i'm guessing if the tube is whooshing and you tap it with a pencil it may start showing it's true colors. Might not work, but it's a very easy thing to try.

Hmm, I just hope it's a pre rather than a power.

Thing is, I've mixed around the tubes a few times to see which sounded better, but I've lost track of which are broken, I have one which I've labelled that I'm sure is faulty, otherwise I'm not sure.

UPDATE - I turned the amp around, took the preamp valve cover off and turned the amp on, no wooshing this time but when I poked the preamp tubes, on the overdrive channel (which made a hiss, as OD channels do) I poked all the valves and tapped them, when I poked the V3 preamp valve, the hissing dissapeaered and didn't return. I turned the amp off and the wooshing and pop came for several seconds after I turned the power off.

Yup... Same situation here. I have boxes upon boxes of tubes, both pre and power. I lose track of what was good and what wasn't.

It'll drive you bonkers. Best thing to do is just retube the whole amp with brand new tubes. I know it's not the cheapest alternative, but it will fix it.

It'll drive you bonkers. Best thing to do is just retube the whole amp with brand new tubes. I know it's not the cheapest alternative, but it will fix it.

I replaced the outer two EHx valves with JJs and turned it on, then off again, not a single sound to be heard. :S

Yeah play it for a bit. Maybe that fixes it. If anything it's the PI that fixed it.

My 5150 is currently doing the same thing.
Like a "ghost howl" in the background.
I am replacing all the pre-amp tubes this upcoming week.
If it still does it.........
The new powertubes go in.
Really hope its not that.
It still plays LOUD AND STRONG so I hope its just the pre-amp tubes.
