would a maxon od808 give me more of a boost then my OCD?

i currently used a Fulltone OCD to boost my mark iv so i can keep the gain a little lower to retain some clarity. I've been looking at other overdrives and the maxon seems like a good deal and a real reliable pedal, but would it give me more of a volume boost then my OCD? i usually turn the gain all the way down and just use it as a volume boost.
 
No. I own an OD808 and played an OCD for the first time yesterday. The OCD has more boost. Alot more than the OD808.
 
I don't have the Maxon, but I have both an OCD and a TS808. The OCD has much more of a boost.
 
Yeah the 808 doesnt have a hole lot of output compared to the OCD and most of the boutique ODs. You can get more out of the 808 by modding it though. Or check out the Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret and Fromel Death IS Gain ODs. Based off of the 808 i believe and they have tons of output.

This. I consider the OD808 a softer overdive than the OCD.

For sure. the OCD has twice the output and 3x's the gain. Plus its a very grainy sounding OD. And there's the whole lowend thing
 
I have used both of these. For tightening up an amp I would go with a RocketFuel or a Bloody Murder. I have yet to find better and have been through quite a few.
 
My favorite Maxon boost so far has been the OD9 pro+, works well with so many different amps.
 
also i dont think the maxon would be as transparent as the OCD
 
The OD808 sounds better as a true clean boost, IMO, and the OCD has more gain.

I've owned both, sold the OCD, still have the OD808, which has since been PWNT off of my pedal board by the Suhr Koko Boost, which is hands-down, in all my years of pedal whoredom, the best boost I have ever tried. Whether you use it for a true clean boost, or employ it as more of an overdrive, it just can't be beat, IMO. The mid-boost feature for me is really what makes it!

I see Mark, aka samhill, is a mod here, ask him about it and/or check out his demo vid of it sometime! :thumbsup:

If you really want a Maxon, though, I'd recommend the OD9. Essentially the same basic concept as the OD808, it's a killer super-screamer that's built more ruggedly. I've had the switch on my OD808 go out twice on me, and if you check out Analogman.com, Mike will also recommend the OD9 for the same reason.

They're all great pedals, though, and owner subjectivity will likely be the main difference in the end.
