A well known amp builder mentioned to me that the RI have Chinese made Transformers that are harsh sounding in his opinion.

Unless something has changed recently, the RIs were using UK made Dagnall trannies. I have worked on a lot of them and they all had those in them.

Does the "Classic gain" mode or channel of the DSL 100 come close to a JCM 800? I know alot of peopel like these amps... But I have not actually compared this... I was thinking of gettind a DSL 1000 cheap before hearing that 83' 2203 and maybe doing a tranny upgrade possibly

Dude the DSL classic channel IMO is not even close to my 82' JCM800/EL34 stock 100w head. Feelwise its night and day, those older JCM's have these beefy trannies and are louder than sin! As for the reissues, i think they are not bad, but I can tell a difference and they're not as warm and organic sounding as the real deal.. at least to my ears.

Whats a cali mod jcm 800?

Mike Fortin's take on the Jose diode clipping hi gain Marshall mod. They are killer for the 80's hot rod to super hi gain Marshall tones.

I think you would probably dig Mike's Hulk mod more though. I have one and it is sick. Blows every amp I have away. And I have a 77 JMP 2203 stock and a million different od/boost pedals. You can check mine out in the video in my signature. Fortin Evil Pumpkin Video.

I tried to go back and edit my post about the Chinese part; not 100% sure I remembered that correctly, but the darn cursor kept jumping on me so I just left it. Something about the transformers not being up to snuff as compared to the originals was the gist of it though.

This probably doesn't help but someone posted a killer modded DSL clip on here last year. If I could remember where it is I would post it. Sounded really good! I owned a DSL for a few days and couldn't bond with it (granted this was 10 years ago). If I had one that sounded like this I would have kept it. Either way, I have a Cali modded JCM800 that I am waiting on right now. Can't wait. Hope you find what you are looking for Giles. With your skill you will rip on that amp!!

Not sure if that is what you are looking for, Danny will have to chime in. I know it will get heavier and you can bypass the mods.

It started out as a '97 1959SLP RI. Mike does a massive mod to it, more than just changing a few things, it is almost a re-build. Mine has the following:

2 Footswitchable Gain controls
2 Footswitchable Master Volumes
Push/Pull voicing on each gain
Girth and Grind controls
Depth control
Push/Pull bass shift on the bass knob
Dual Bias - allows for the use of 2 types of power tubes at once
External bias

That video was done with a Spalwn 2x12 because my 412s were at the rehearsal space. I hardly ever use that 2x12 but it was what I had on the day that I made the vid. I normally play the amp through two 1960BVs.

Just wondering, is the amp in that video a RI or a real JCM 800?

The 2203 I played the other night had an old set og GE 6550's and that amp was breath taking..

If you want the same tone as that particular 2203, another 2203 without GE 6550s won't get it. Those GE's are the best 6550s IMO and have a very unique tone. Those tubes are very expensive these days, if you can find them at all.

I believe it was an 80s superbass.

So modding an RI would be a watse then???

G.

I don't think so. I purposely did not send my JMP to get modded.

See if you can talk him down a bit in price.

You could jump in the car and grab that one dude. Go get it now!!!!

I've got an '83 JCM 2204 that sounds great I've considering selling. Sounds like you're looking only for 100W though.

knowing your taste Giles, I recommend a non-RI Marshall 2203 JCM or JMP with 6550s. I can say for sure that the older models seem to have less high end than RIs do. It may be due to components ageing or something else, but there is a difference.

Get out your ouija board and ask Hendrix what he thinks about that. ;)

I know this is all subjective but it's not even close to my EARS... The RI's are just waaaay harsh in top end compared to the originals to my ears and lack somthing ballsy over all.

I played a 100% stock 1983 2203 w/ 6550's at my studio the other night and the RI 2203x could never sound as good as that amp IMO.

I seriously shat myself in 4 shades of brown when I slammed that bad boy with a OD-9 and EMG's... I could not stop playing... It was pure heaven man...

I have owned a brand new RI and three of the Zakk Wylde 2203's RI's in the past and I also play them all the time at GC, Scam Cash, MAE, etc and I personally think the RI's do not even come close at all to the smooth sound and ballsey crunchy bark of the originals. But hey thats me...

G.

One of my reissues isn't stock. I replaced the caps, resistors, tubes and the OT in it. I would put it up against any of the older ones any day of the week. The stock reissue amp still sounds great to me. I keep it because I play live every now and then. I like a brighter amp because I can hear it better in the mix.
