I think his point is that, to his mind, if you weren't in the band when the band reached it's most significant achievements/popularity, then you shouldn't leave that band andlater make your claim to fame by having played in the band.
I'm not sure that's a valid point, but I think that's what Dee is saying. I don't think I agree with it because it all depends. For example, was White Snake at its best in the 80s simple because it was popular? Is popularity then the end-all-be-all measure of artistic success? I don't think so.
