Wtf is it with L. P ''s

It could be Canadian retailers get the runts of the litter. I've played many at shops over the years and 99 % sound like dead, unresponsive hunks of driftwood.

I have to side with the OP on this one.

These blow away most Gibson LP's I have played imho..

FYI, the OP has been playing pro since most of this board were still shitting their pants. His experiences echos my luck with Gibson products.

brings back some memories !

Shawn, concert clip from an old show, here is 1 of my old strats I modded into a super strat, i don't think we called then super strats back than !

i toured with it extensively along with l.p.'s

have always modded guitars all the time

It's spelled Whistler...

Aw just shittin' ya Bro. Hey what year was this clip taken?? I was partying pretty hardcore in my "hizzy of da hills da Mighty Whiz" since '91. This looks a touch 80s, so not sure. I was still in T.O. back then rockin' the Boom Boom Room, and that one club you guys hit in Newmarket fairly often - can't remember the name of it, but it was always a dubious scene backstage with the ladies and the poisons

Memories?? Hazy at best.

shawn, ignore the last comment. We're both from the same generation, u sounded much younger.
Unstable tuning on the r9 & custom shop l.p's . Most sounded dead, not resonant. Some frets fretting out, poor binding workmanship - spots not flush with body and on neck, inlay cut ins not fitted tight on fretboard (gaps) rough feel, nut off center on neck gluded beyond the edge, some were buzzing, bad intonation, some tops not close to matching .
Very disappointed. Will be holding onto my current older l.p.'s.
Will continue looking for l.p, vibe type of guitar to added to the coral, but it won't be from gibson.
I have seen and played a few lesters with these issues mostly at gc.
I love les pauls and own a few of them but it took me a while to find the ones i was happy with. They are my favorite guitars i own. I bought another les paul last night and should have it the end of the week, im hoping it has no issues but if it does i will not keep it.

... after handling all these Les Pauls and truly wanting to find one of the good ones, I have decided, "Meh".

I love you man

That's one of the most beautiful things I've ever read on the internet.

Cool stuff...we didn't call them super strats back then either ;) I played large headstock Fender Strat with humbuckers and a Floyd for a long time plus Charvels, Jackson and Ibanez floyded strat style guitars. My comment about LP's being "old dudes guitars" was what I thought back in the day when i was a young whippersnapper tearing it up. Of course me being an old dude now at 48 I love LP's today ;) I want a Black Beauty Custom now ;)

I agree with this thread. I'm a huge Aldrich/Sykes fan and the urge to buy one was at an all time level three years ago. I went to my local guitar center on a few different occasions to try various LP's out and came away with the same thoughts as a lot of the posts here. They felt like cheap copies of an iconic guitar. The wood was pretty, but the necks felt like twice as heavy as the bodies, and the sound was dull and lifeless; almost like veneered plywood bodies. For a guitar that was going to cost me $2200+, I was extremely disappointed.

Perhaps you need to step up to the Hertiage level or what ever the version is above the custom's, but when you're talking $3000+ for a new guitar, that isn't hand made, that is stupid.

FWIW, if any of you ever want a killer Les Paul and want to make sure it's not a dud, I can only say incredible things about Jim and Janine from Route 66 Classic Guitars (www.route66classicguitars.com)

I've had the pleasure of picking up a couple Lesters from them - unplayed - unseen - and each one came PERFECTLY set up, and to this day, are my fave players out of the bunch. They just came out of case ready to go, and felt perfect in my hands. Jim knows his woods, his tones, the feel, the 'everything'.

So just saying - this isn't GC or MF - this is route66, and they know their stuff

Stratocasters are not SUPERSTRATS. Jeez.

I've yet to play an LP I wanted to play a second time. They always feel clunky and "slow". I don't think it's a quality issue for me, I'm just not an LP guy. I love their looks though.

I got a new blue sparkleburst les paul custom yesterday and the only quality issue i could find was a little bit of overspray on the white binding at the nut, it feels and plays great and i really like the guitar alot, i might change the bridge pu.

It starts.

solution - commission custom build, luthier resumes and interviews will begin.

UNCLE MO, starts and never an end, change the pots, caps., try and try different pups. tuners, new nut . new tail pieces, shave the neck, re-carve.
Might as well just have it built to specs.

I like my LP's but they were full of small finish issues, do sound and play great though. If they were stolen I would just pocket the insurance money and wouldn't bother replacing them.
