now it's working.....wtf!!!???? I also have an add on cooling unit that I've been running since day one so it shouldnt overheat-right? This is strange.

Mine got the ring and then started working again...then the ring came back the next day...and it started working again...then it came back...

Once it shows up once, you need to get it fixed because it's just gonna keep coming back up. The cooling units don't really help at all honestly. It's a design flaw in the system that makes it fuck up.

Same here, although Microsoft was very responsive. In fact, they simply replaced my "red ring" unit with a completely new box and a free month of x-box live. We'll see how long this new one lasts.

For a second I thought you were going to say they replaced your red ring with a green one. :D

False. The problem is compounded by the x-clamp design they use. The circuit boards in the 360s are bent where the GPU is. The stock x-clamp simply does not provide enough pressure to keep a solid connection. When you start adding heat into the mix, the solder gets hot, and the connection breaks loose. Sure, the fan and heatsink help with some of the cooling issues, but even the Elites are RRoDing.

Edit: And proof that the Elites still RRoD

Well that still means the problem FOR the solder coming under is because of the heat, so actually, no, I am not wrong. EAT IT!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHA :D

Well compared to regular 360s, especially the early models, it's significantly less. I am not worried about getting the RRoD anytime soon, if ever thanks to the extra cooling I have. Oh well though, hopefuly Xbox 1080 ( ;) ) will not have such problems.

The RRoD only applies to regular 360s. It is basically 100% due to overheating problems do to a weak factory fan and weak heatsink. The Elite 360 incorporates a new board with 2 heatsinks and a "slightly" more powerful fan. If you don't want the RRoD, spend a little extra for an Elite 360. The new versions of regular 360's are better though.

My friends Elite RROD'd too

I believe aldog1330 told me that he bought a brand new 360 a while back and the first time he turned it on it had the red ring. How pathetic is that?

Mine's still working, but my friend's 360 died earlier this year... the first replacement they sent him died too  the third one has been working for a few months now.. whoever designed that thing should just've been taken out and shot

Leaning more and more towards the PS3....................

This is BS. The new ones get RRoDs just as much as the old ones.

It has nothing to do with fans or heatsinks - it's clamps on the GPU.

xbox 360: noisy and unreliable
ps3: way too expensive
wii: quiet, reliable, small, virtual console. honestly, the wii smokes the xbox 360 and ps3

1 year going strong and no rings of death for me. The first thing i did was buy the Nyko fan, and i don't have it inside of my entertainment console.

Too bad most Wii games are suited for 9 year olds and the graphics look only slightly better than a PS2.

Everything you said about the Wii can be applied to the PS3 as well. It's totally an opinion and doesn't really help him decide. Also, you're in the UK. Last time I checked, Wii prices were at £289.99, the PS3 at £299.99, and the 360 at £249.99 (with the Elite at £299.99).

These are both stupid comments

1. I have a wii, and I still want a PS3. Its a great system but you miss out on a lot of good games

2. Yeah, you're right. All the games are for 9 year olds...

Don't forget Manhunt 2 for the Wii. I mean, every 9 year old wants to play that game.

Again, I said last time I checked. It still shows that price on Amazon.uk as well. You didn't respond to my other questions, though.

  I knew some of you would get your panties all twisted over those comments. ;)

But the comment i repsonded to was just as stupid. Let me see them try to run COD4 on the Wii.

They could if they really wanted. They have Manhunt 2 for the PSP, so I'm sure they could port over COD4 to the Wii if they wished.

Hey guys help a non gamer out. I am about to buy both of my sons an Xbox 360, what is the red ring of death thing? Is there anyway to detect the defect before you buy the Xbox?

It happens for the reason I explained above. There's no way of detecting it, nor is there any real way of preventing it from happening. The best you can do is to keep the system well ventilated and hope for the best. Microsoft has a good warranty on the 360 so you can always send it in if it breaks.
