Don't want to deal with gigging with a real echoplex but I dig what they do as a preamp. Has anybody tried the EP Booster and if so, what are your thoughts? Thanks

I added one to Bernie Williams rig and it actually works very well.
Very transparent, and boosts the hell out of the front of any amp.

If you like the ep pre effect you'll like the pedal types.

Be aware the xotic is not the first one, they actually copied the idea from another builder. Exotic made their own design.

The original builder makes the actual echo plex preamp.

Works great in the loop too for a solo boost. In front of the amp it adds a little bass.

The Clinch unit seems to be getting more love in that its effect on tone is closer to the real deal. Also found some good reviews for a unit called the Badgerplex Pre.

Thanks for the replies! Anyone else? :checkthisout:

it boosts a little too much low end for rhythm playing for my tastes, right up my ally for lead boosts tho.

A buddy of mine uses it. He used to play for Buckcherry (Yogi) He loves it.

It is a little small and hard to find and stabilize on the board. Sounds good though. It has two sets of dip switches inside to tailor the tone a bit from bright to darker. Tone wise, its run of the mill stuff and nothing special. You would be better off stepping up to an AC or RC booster if you stay with XOTIC.

I just got one a couple weeks ago and it was a very good decision. it sits first in line on my pedal board and is on all the time. Helps put the naked amp where I like it when using the dirt channel. the dip switches had a negligible affect for me.

Has anybody tried the badgerplex? I'm not looking for a boost per se (have my SHO for that) as much as I want the tonal benefits and feel offered by the EP3. It sounds like the Badgerplex may be the one for that.

I'd be concerned at the increase in bass.. suppose you want to get that boost/low cut VH thing going on, will the badger plex do that? sounds good in the demos but the guy demoing it makes everything sound good.

I have the Badgerplex Vintage Pre and it is awesome. Never tried the EP, but I can vouch that the Badgerplex kicks ass...

Yup. It rules. Get one! I used it on that "Little Wing" clip I posted a while ago (along with my El Capistan). Sounds identical to the EP3s I've played through...

BTW - if you are interested, I have a Badgerplex Pre Plural I could sell you so you wouldn't have to wait...

I think the clinchfx is more a replication of the original preamp and the EP is more its own thing but based on the original. I can't vouch for the other units, but I do have an EP booster. I really dig it. It boosts the low end, the lower mids, and the top end, but doesn't take away from the upper mids. It makes things "bigger" sounding. It's kind of hard to explain, but whatever it is boosting, sounds bigger. It also makes things a little more ballsy.

That said, it might not be a good boost pedal for an amp that already has an emphasis on the low end and lower mids. It is a great pedal for Marshall type amps to give it a little push.

Sounds pretty damn good and boosts more than I thought it might! How about a badgerplex comparison now?

Wow, I really dug that. I was looking into these a few months ago. I should pick one up and try it out.

I had to say it...I will stick with the echoplex although the clinch has my attention.
Do you gig regularly? Having something that's more reliable and takes up substantially less real estate while offering similar tone and feel characteristics is a big win IMO. I dig the EP3 (as well as my old EP2 and a Roland Space Echo) but they aren't the most gig friendly pieces.

Just got the Badgerplex Pre Plural tonight...what a cool pedal! It's one of those pieces of equipment that you turn on and wonder exactly what its doing for you. Then you turn it off and it all becomes clear.
