So, long story short, I recently bought a Strat style guitar, only to have it arrive with issues. I bought it for some session work, but now the guitar is back at the factory and I've been told that they haven't even looked at yet it let alone have a plan for repair/replacement.

SO, now I'm kind of boned and am in the market for another S style guitar to hold me over until the other guitar is all sorted out. I've played a bunch of Yamaha Pacificas over the years that have been great bang for the buck guitars with a slightly more modern fretboard radius, but I never really paid much attention to which versions they were. I've been told that some of the older versions were built in a different factory than the newer offerings, so if any of you guys are into them....what years should I keep an eye out for? I know the electronics aren't anything to write home about, but if I can pick something up on the cheap and pop in a decent pickup to hold me over, I'd rather not dish out a bunch of loot considering I just paid 2k for a guitar that I don't have.

Look for 721 or 921. Made in the 90's, can be had for a song, and some of the best strat style guitars I've ever owned.

Great advice here. I would also say they had a tele on acid version as well and a good buddy of mine has had his forever. Not sure of model but it has a great neck maple with black inlays. Solid guitars and total steals. He also has a few of the rgx models and those a real shred machines.

Awesome, thanks guys. I've never played a Pacifica that I didn't like (even the $199 models are killer for the money) so I think I'm going to do some hunting today. Appreciate the help!

The Tele model you mentioned is a 1230. I had the one with the three P100s. Super wide thin neck.

His is a hsh but yes it's definitely a shred neck. Cool guitars and they also had a warmoth deal at one point if I remember where you could kind of get options galore. That may have been after these guitars.

The Warmoth ones were a little later on - late 90's. That said, the first round of SuperStrats they did were pretty much flawless as they were intended. I had all of them except the super-high-end neck-thrus. My personal fave was the 921, followed by the 1221M - the "Bill Leverty model".

Thanks guys! I have to move quickly so I'm going to snag one locally here in Portland, but this has been really helpful!

Found this thing in a pawnshop. $75 of fun and it's great! I had to level some frets, but the neck is straight and even the stock pickups don't offend me. This little guy is a lot of bang for the buck, and will hold me over until the neck on the other S style guitar is finished.
