yeah, another VH kemper clip - somebody get me a doctor

Just to add to the discusion, I can see why someone mentioned Tom Scholz because there is most definitely a mid spike in that tone.

If I had to guess I would have thought that there was a tubscreamer with the mids on 10 added to the sound.

As far as the tone goes, I think it sounds a bit thin for my tatsse but Ive heard cranked Marshalls sound exactly like the clip you posted,(minus the mid spike) so I think the Kemper is doing it's job FINE.

Now as a person who has done some research on the Kemper I can tell you this, if you do some digging you will find some pretty mind blowing video comparisons out there on this. I think it's an incredible piece of gear.

I can't comment on the feel thing as I've never played one.

I actually found this video pretty interesting

Hey Pete. Great playing. Does it sound like VH? Not to me. Does it sound good? It does to me! :) I guess whenever you do a clip around here and you play some VH riffs, it's going to get compared to that type of tone.

As far as feel is concerned, I like whatever I play to feel easy. I got kids who need help with their homework and the dog has to go take a shit what I need to fight my fucking amp too!?!?! ;) So if it feels easy to play, you win.

AS an EVH freak I have no problem reading your thoughts, we all know what you can do playing wise and your work modding marshalls

EVH's Iso tracks also do not sound very good, very thin and razor treble so IMO I would not be chasing that tone myself. I thought this sounded great but you do make a point, the feel.

I thought it sounded great Pete and hope that you can profile some other builder's work so we can compare

Our opinions differ.

Not only do i disagree with you on the ISO tracks but i also disagree that this clip sounds "great"... its actually far from it IMHO.
The only thing that would save it for me is that it felt better than other digital modelers but again my assumption is it doesn't and that is based on what i hear.

for whatever its worth part of what i'm dialing in when i tweak is how i think i hear Edwards sound "feels" in listening to him play, if that makes sense and it this clip alone it sounds like its missing what modelers usually miss, that dynamic response that a real amp has.

Again though.. I would argue that you just don't like the tone he dialed into the amp and the way he recorded it. For this to be a measure of the kemper you need one sound file A/B 'ing the mic'ed amp and then the kemper. I bet if he just recorded his superlead you could make the same comments. To my ears, this thing is pretty accurate. that said, cab sims do a great job too but I do notice that they make everything too even. I will have to hear more clips to determine whether or not this is happening with the kemper as well.

THIS makes perfect sense to me, and is why I figure certain amps are more motivating than others (for me)

I agree with you on all of this. I'm not really diggin the sound at all but that's just me. Ive heard enough from teh kemper to really dig it but as far as dynamic response is concerned, Im not sure if they will ever capture that 100% either. It's like artificial flavors. they have been around for years but do they really taste like the real thing? Not IMHO.

With that said, given that I believe you come from the Cranked Marshall type school, I think that type of feel is realy hard to capture on a modelor but I think the Higher gained out tones might feel just fine (all IMHO)
What I will say is, That id love for you to get your hands on one of these and Profile your amp because I know that you have the mic placement and sound DOWN. it would be interesting to hear the profiled tone. Im not so sure that it would feel like your Mod five but after seeing every video of the Kemper, you might be surprised by the sound. Well that's my theory and I'm stickin to it :D

so you're saying it works with a congested, already lacking dynamics, sound then? :)

all kidding aside,(not really kidding but kind of am. ;) ) i hear what you are saying because my line6 is that already which again is my whole premise, its digital modeling. as well, i tend to use more of high gain sound when i'm using the line6 and it works but the main thing is we are (or i am) talking digital modeling and with this latest development in that WE can now do our own modeling, ( and as you point that we can do our own mic'ing. that in itself is cool)

When all is said and done its still digital modeling and that is still far from the feel of a real amp. i also have to say i hear that digital sheen that is on the sound that is inherent with all digital modelers.

again only my 6 cents,
Mark

if your strings aint new, definitely makes em sound nice and bright!

I think the clip sounds a little wierd, like the EQ is spiked in a few places. But if the original source sounds like that then the Kemper is doing it's job I guess.

+1

It helps if you tune your guitar half a step back ............you should be able to capture the sound a little better that way. ;)

I took a stab at this tune today as well. :)

Im still trying to get a feel for this,, IMHO I have heard better from the poster, this isn't the best could be the way it was mic'd

Hey Mark, check out the kemper dynamics thread I put up - hear a digital sheen there? I'm curious.

pete

Pete, i checked it out. it sounds good.
its only for you to tell me, when comparing to the real deal, if YOU can feel the difference. ;)
