The 80s Shrapnel shred scene really screwed Neil's playing. He went from a tasty feel type player with a great clear tone to a wannabe shredder with a washy fuzzier tone. He's not from that school of playing nor does he have the chops to pull it off, so it sounds mushy, messy & amateurish at times. Same thing happened to Steve Lukather imo. Both should drop the rack gear & go back to their old tones & bluesy fell type playing.
Rack gear? I thought the foundation of his tone is a Freidman?

He may be using a Friedman, but he has a HUGE multi rack system as well with a million different effects.

Lukather is way cleaner in his technique than Schon. Not comparable imo.

Wow. Schon and Lukather slammed in the same thread.

Agreed.

Schon is better than 99% of the players out there. Hard to believe he's getting bashed.

I've always thought Luke was one of the best but I think he has upped his game -- even for him. Neal, the last time I saw them live, his sound was a bit of a blurry confusion of notes--like he played too fast for the amount of delay he was using. He "looked" to be playing great and his hands moved effortlessly all over the fingerboard--but his sound was far from the big fat sound he had in the early 80's.

Jump to 1:30 and listen to that fast run. Then listen to the mix when singing starts...

I like the mix in that song. I didn't listen to the whole concert, but in the first song you could hear everybody clearly - which is rare in live DVD. Hell, it's rare on lots of studio CDs.

I like Luke's style and phrasing more also.

This is so true. Neil gave several very revealing interviews during the 80s that made it clear was very jealous of EVH and the attention that he got for guitar playing. Here he was, the lead guitarist in a band that was on top of the world back then, and he let that get to him.

I really respected him as a guitarist from the Santana years up through Journey's Escape. Then he went all Floyd Rosy and shredy. It doesn't fit his playing style.

I liked the older stuff he did.....
he seems to be a bit odd these days.

If you listen to the 1981 live album (the one recorded in Houston on the Escape tour) it's amazing. Awesome tone, awesome playing.

Listen to the Manila concert above - it's just sustainer-floydrose-saturated mush that may as well be a first-gen POD on the Recto preset going straight into the board.

One of my favorite "band" guitarist. Really liked him in Bad English and Hardline too. Haven't listened to anything since then, just see the weird stories and hear he's over the top now. Sad. Maybe he'll pull it together ala Lynch or EVH.

Ditto.

I love his playing and writing

Here are some other thing she did that I like

6-String Theory, Schon and Lukather

Paul Rogers and Schon

His guitar work is awesome in this, imo

I had to put this too-- when she was feminine and hot/glamorous, now she is ghetto fabulous.

Back to Schon:

I've always like Schon. I like the feeling that goes into his playing. It doesn't have to be super articulate like Vinnie Moore or Paul Gilbert. It's the emotion behind it that gets me.

That said, I can't stand where Journey has gone since Steve Augeri left. I thought he was a suitable replacement for Perry, and the albums they made with him were strong (especially Arrival). However, I can't get behind this cover band singer that they have now. Just ain't working for me.

Schon and Journey were awesome up until Frontiers. My favorite was when they had Rollie in the band. Just listen to Schon's solo at 2:00. Just perfect playing.

Greg was the heart of the band IMO...those 1st three albums with Perry/Rollie were very unique. Great songs, arrangements...playing. Once Cain came in it got progressively worse, to the point that they were just a pop band. Although Escape is a fantastic album you could see where it was heading. I never had much use for them after that.

Departure...Schon was brilliant on the album and my personal favorite Journey recording.

This is my Favorite Journey....BY FAR!
Such good GOOD music...

There are several guys on this forum with technique that destroys Schon's; those are the guys that should be shredding. When Schon tries to "shred" he often sounds like crap. It's legitimate that he be under scrutiny.
