He got caught up in the race during the Hear n' Aid sessions and never recovered ;)

I always thought it was just me, because many people thought he was one of the best on Hear N Aid, but I just saw his hands moving really fast on that solo and couldn't really hear anything clearly.

I always thought Buck Dharma (Blue Oyster Cult) killed the other guys on that.

I saw Journey in 2010 - Neal's solos were pretty much the following formula - short melodic pattern, then GIANT FAST NOTE FLURRY CRAM, then repeat and rinse. Saw them with Night Ranger, Brad and the Jeff Watson clone they grew in a laboratory smoked Neal.

Should shred, shouldn't shred, some shred better, it's the NS show since SP left, NS is no YM..........

blah, blah, blah, blah...... :jerkit: :jerkit: :jerkit: :jerkit: :jerkit: :jerkit: :jerkit: :jerkit:

Who gives a rats ass???

Schon's played way too much killer stuff for me to slight him here. Just a super player when he's got composition in mind. He doesn't even begin to approach Lynch levels of WTF :D

But he sure ain't no Jake E.

There are several guys on this forum with technique that destroys Schon's; those are the guys that should be shredding. When Schon tries to "shred" he often sounds like crap. It's legitimate that he be under scrutiny.

I've always thought his 40 year successful career was his justification, for doing things the way he does. None of the shredders here, have or will likely ever-- play or write anything as well known, and that stands the test of time-- as any of Schon's stuff. (Steve Stevens being the only one I can think of, but I bet he respects Neal.) That said, clearly there are those who love his playing and others that don't-- and that is the way of the world.

Neal is smiling all the way to the bank, knowing he doesn't have to do anything anymore, and he can continue to live a luxurious life style. And... he's choosing to keep playing, and doing what he loves and he's still making $$$ doing it. May we all be so fortunate.

They toured Australia recently and he was only using an Axe FX and it sounded horrible to my ears, and WAY too much delay.

It's funny how these discussions always end up with someone saying you shouldn't criticize the artist in question because he's richer than you.

I like his playing with journey. Some of it is very memorable.

I'll say it. I always hated the radio oriented Journey tracks. But it was the stuff the ladies wanted to slow dance to. And in a cover band it was part of why we were there. And who doesn't want to be a little rough on the beaver?

But I detest Oh Sherri...

The old guitar tone and licks from the rock side of Journey were great. Escape was one of my favorites of theirs.

I don't think anyone is saying he shouldn't be criticized because he is rich. The point is that artists only gain fame and fortune by writing/playing music that a lot of people enjoy - and a lot of people enjoy what he's done. Considering that, maybe some of the criticism is unjustified. He may not be the most technical guitar player; he may not be a shred-master; he may enjoy posting selfies that should remain private   . But, the dude can play and he's been successful at it for a very long time. We should all be so lucky...

I don't think anybody was putting down his earlier body of work...simply offering the opinion that his playing/tone has not "aged" well. Not sure why people feel the need to escalate things to encompass more than the intent of the OP?

One of my favorite "band" guitarist. Really liked him in Bad English and Hardline too. Haven't listened to anything since then, just see the weird stories and hear he's over the top now. Sad. Maybe he'll pull it together ala Lynch or EVH.

I'm thinking almost exactly the same thing here. I really liked Schon's stuff in Bad English and some of Hardline too (especially Double Eclipse!). Other than that, I'm ashamed to admit, he's not that familiar to me aside from the weird stories.

I was and am aware of his reputation of being a badass guitarist, but the Journey stuff really never took off with me for one reason or another.

Rupe - greetings :)
I wasn't trying to escalate anything; my apologies if the post came across that way. It felt to me like there was an implication that Zachman was excluding Schon from criticism simply because he is (presumed to be) rich. I was pretty certain that's not what he meant and just offered my two cents...

It's all good

i was really hoping to never see that teabag tan picture of him with his junk out again...fuck it's just so disturbing!

I'm suspicious of anyone who would slag any of the guitarists mentioned in this thread... I mean, its not like we are talking about thrash metal guitarists or anything...lol gotta love those slayer solos
