You ever think about suicide?

I always wonder why the first instinct of people is to rush to the aid of suicidal people. Why?

They are suicidal because nature has selected them out of the gene pool. In the long run, that is what is supposed to be best for the overall wellbeing of the species.

I'm suicidal and I've had people in the past rush to the rescue to stop me.

This behavior has to be a modern phenomenon. Especially when it's someone you don't know. I don't get it. Why do people just automatically rush to stop people from killing themselves? It would seem that in order to have the type of psychology of someone who would commit suicide, it would have to be reflected in your genes. You would think an adaptation would have evolved to recognize that suicidal people are undesirable, and therefore not worth trying to salvage. It just kind of defies the logic of nature.

I'm not trying to troll here. It's a legitimate thought. I've always wondered this. What's your guy's thoughts?

Herein lies one of the flaws in your argument:
It's not in your genes. Can happen to anyone. Depends entirely upon circumstances and one's reaction to them. Everyone has a point at which things can become too-much-to-handle; it's just that the extent of challenges required to tip folks over the edge varies wildly from individual to individual and that's not a reflection of genetics but resilience, something that's learned through life and worked on by some but ignored completely by others.

Thread moved to OTC General. You have to be in a sub-forum first before creating a thread lest it float outside of the OTC sub-forums, next to the stickies, one of which explains this.

I’ve never thought about suicide, but if life created overwhelming hopelessness, I’d have no problem dropping out. I left my point very broad on purpose. Hopelessness for you will be very different for me. Here lies the major issue. Hopelessness for me would have to be so extreme that anyone of sound mind would agree death is better than life. Let’s use the Johnny Got His Gun example. I’d easily choose death over being left in the state of the main character. I’d have to believe most people would as well. Now if someone feels hopelessness not being able to find a job or a mate or something trivial, this is NOT something to kill yourself for. ? Seeking help at this point is a good thing.

The thing with hopelessness, apart from the fact that it's often the straw that breaks the camel's back, is that in and of itself it's a state of mind that can be broken by a single revelation or piece of good news.

I've been in a hopeless situation / state of mind many times, sometimes for many years on-end, and for sure it's a dangerous place to be. You have to be super-resilient and trust that somehow things will pick up, lest you give up. I've had over 20 nervous breakdowns and I'm still here. Not going anywhere.

Prolonged hopelessness, especially coupled with a lack of resilience, is a dangerous state to dwell in for the vast majority of peeps.

well if your not livin on the edge your taking up to much space...

Whatever an individual's cause for hopelessness is, suicide is a very permanent solution to usually a temporary situation. There are exceptions but they tend to be in the small percentage of cases.

This was my favourite saying back in the '90s bro'.

Yup.

As I said earlier, it can take just a single piece of good news to drastically alter the course one's on.

As you'd know, the problem is trying to convince someone or yourself that a single piece of information can have such a transformational effect when the "patient" can see nothing but black clouds.

I believe there is no such thing as suicidal, because you would have killed yourself already. I believe there is such thing as stupidity, though...such as slitting your wrists. If you want to commit suicide, why do you worry about people who worry about you?

For someone who has taken their own life and is dead, those are the ones who were suicidal.

Well, yes. Those that are truly committed to doing it, do it. There's nothing to stop it. Those that threaten to or commence the act slowly to try and be stopped are asking for help or are begging for attention.

I agree they are looking for attention. Does that mean they get no attention at all or or is their lust for attention insatiable?

I was incredibly, INCREDIBLY whiskey drunk when I wrote this thread. It brings my demons out. I'm fine. Episode over. Thanks guys.

I understand that. been on a few suicidal/homicidal ones before myself. shit is no good.

Alcohol is a depressant, so if you're vulnerable at the time / not in a positive place, it will tend to draw out negative thoughts and "encourage" you to project them to their logical ends.

Here's some key points to avoid suicidal thoughts.

1. Your life is about responsibility, not rights. Your family, your job and yourself. Prioritise this and let it fuel your actions. It will change your life.
2. Get a routine. Sleep properly and at the same time each night.
3. Respect the value of physical health - exercise and good food.
4. Focus on a passion.
