Hypothetical situation...you are given $1000 to build a cheap efficient rack rig with a preamp, power amp, effects processor, and a MIDI footswitch. What would you use? Feel free to include other items as well in it as long as it is under $1000 with used prices.

Marshall JMP-1
Mesa fifty/fifty
Gmajor
rocktron midi-mate or behringer board?

ADA MP1
Mesa 50/50 or that old Peavey power amp
Rocktron Intellifex
Midi Mate

Critical question.

And even more critical a question, why? Not being the resident a-hole, but why not just get a sweet combo and some stomps? :dunno:

What type of music?

various...anything from classic rock to modern metal. versatility is key.

Used Rocktron Prophesy.(can dial in ok sounding presets, and has all effects in one).
Used Power Amp.
Used Furman
Used SKB 6 space case
Used footcontroller

Marshall JMP-1 or ADA MP-1 Classic and MIDI controller
Alesis Quadraverb Plus and/or Rocktron Intellifex
Marshall 9005 Series 50 watt per channel EL-34 Power amp(Destroyed the Mesa 50/50 I had..huge 4-space amp, but mean as hell!)

having owned an MP1 in my lifetime i seriously have no fucking clue how some of you pull the tones out of them you do. i have said this before, but i got nothing like the tones nuno got on extreme's album or paul gilbert. thin, lifeless, bass response was all wierd, no umph behind the notes. just shit tons of noisy gain. and one of the best chorus tones ive ever heard. tried the 3TM - still no luck

JMP-1 voodoo modded (used)
Alesis or peavey for effects (used)
tubed peavey classic 60/60 (stereo, not mono 60)
MIDI mastermind (used)

i have owned a rocktron, and the rubber buttons suck in band environments - you cannot rest your foot over the switch right before a chorus or verse change like a hard switch because you might change it too soon - you cant feel or hear a click either to know it changed - not one of my favorites.

I think that the McIntosh 2100 power amps and old 30w Marshall bottom might have helped a bit with Nuno's tone with the MP-1. I think he also had an EQ as a boost for the preamp.

The last rack I built was my ex-wife's, and it cost me $8000......

did you at least get to enjoy the fruits of your labor? No amount of rack-age could change the amount of distain I hold for my ex...no matter how evil or dark sounding..

Digitech GSP1101 with G2 Footboard
Mesa 2:100 Poweramp
Powerstrip

Done :D

mp-1 with footswitch
peavey classic 50
alesis quadraverb

don't forget some money for the actual rack unless you already have one

Seriously:

Old Rocktron Chameleon ~$100 or so.

VHT 2150 ~ $800 or so.

ADA MC-1 pedal ~ $50

ANY preamp can sound great through a beastly power amp. This is definitely the last place to skimp on quality, at ANY budget.
