You have $1000 to build a rack rig...what would be in it?

  • Thread starter Thread starter smucarolina

3-Space Rack Case
Power Conditioner
Used Rocktron VooDu Valve
Used Marshall EL84 20/20 OR Marshall ValveState 80/80
Used Rocktron MidiMate

Should come in below $1000, sound great, and be flexible, portable, etc.

Seriously:

Old Rocktron Chameleon ~$100 or so.

VHT 2150 ~ $800 or so.

ADA MC-1 pedal ~ $50

ANY preamp can sound great through a beastly power amp. This is definitely the last place to skimp on quality, at ANY budget.
Wow, didn't realize you could pick up a 2150 for under a grand.

1 (new) Furman Power conditioner
1 (used) VHT 2/50/2 Stereo Power amp
1 (stolen) Axe-FX Ultra

Steve

Randall RT2/50 - $50
T.C Electronics G-Major - $250
ADA MP-1 - $250

That must be Blue-Book price.

Out in the market, $800.00 seems a couple hundred shy, at least.

haha you really just wanna get a rack setup dont you. dude why dont you just keep the evh and get an rjm amp switcher and then throw other stuff in the rack.

Lots of good advice in this thread...here's my .02

At least half if not more of your budget should go to the power amp...this will be the engine that makes the whole thing run. In my experience a cheap preamp through a good tube power amp > a great preamp through a budget SS power amp.
A used Mesa 50/50 or 2:90 will be affordable and sound great, as well as the Marshall tube power amps. You can pick up an old Intellifex for pretty cheap and it still holds up to this day. For preamps you there are a ariety of both tube and solid state units like the ADA MP-1 or MP-2, Marshall JMP-1, Hafler/Bogner Triple Giant, etc. Another cool unit you can score for cheap is the Gallien Krueger 100MPL which has some cool effects in as well. I still have one somewhere...gets some incredible clean sounds and nails the "Somewhere in Time" Maiden tones as well as 80's Rush. Some of the older Mesa pre's can be had for pretty cheap as well and sound great.

Good luck

This

Used Rocktron Progap - $100
Used Furman Power Conditioner - $100
Used ART SLA2 - $200
Used TC Gmajor - $150
Used SKB 8 space Rack Case $50
Used Rocktron MidiMate $150
Suhr Riot Pedal $200
Assorted Patch Cables $50

this configuration would give you a turnkey 100 watt stereo/200 watt mono - classic rock and metal rig - not to mention blues, jazz and countless others.

Maybe, the market has rebounded, but 2 years ago, black 2150's were going for $800 and below.

common to see them in the $1100 range easily, i have seen some in the 1300 range - the same league as the purple/chrome plated (polished aluminum w/e) models.

The one mod for ADA MP1 I would recommend is the noise reduction mod.

Hafler G-150 Mosfet
ADA-MP1
Rane Parametric PE15
Rocktron Intellifex

quite a few of you are recommending the ADA MP1, but has anyone been able to emulate both the classic as well as the modern metal tones the OP indicated?

It has enough gain to do anything. The voicing may not be ideal for modern metal but thats easily fixed with an additional EQ.

Thats why I opted to go with a Riot, to make it as turn key as possible. this would make a great competition IRL. 10 guys, $1000 each, purchase used gear off ebay to see who can bring the best overall rig.
