Your favorite, not so obvious, Marshall tones from the 80's.

I still like the Mesa Mark series but let's face it, most of the great tones from THE best decade of guitar tones came from players who used Marshalls. Back then what did suck was trying to find out the tips on how these guys got their tones, it was all like a big secret back then. Of course we've all had our own discoveries, triumph's, failure's etc.

But list some of the tones that you think of when everyone says, "pissed off sounding Marshall". You know that tone, the one that every modded amp tries to nail, some do some don't. And I'm not even sure if what I thought were stock Marshalls were in fact just that? Who knows?

And I said not so obvious becuase I don't feel like talking about Van Halen.  I feel like the one guy who grew up in the 80's who wasn't a huge VH fan.

Funny - I seem to appreciate those tones now more than I did in the 80s.

There's been a few times on VH1( which I don't normally watch) where I've heard almost by mistake for a few minutes "Hair Bands of the 80s " and the standards for tones and playing were very high IMO- bands I barely or never heard of with really kick ass guitar players.........and killer tones.

Then there were bands that I had read about in Guitar Player like Scorpions, but never heard their music until I looked up who the heck was the band in the "Freejack" Movie- his playing was so cool and tones that I actually looked him up a few years ago after seeing the movie on cable- oh THAT's the guy.

The only other time I looked up a Guitar Player from a Movie was the Movie "Twister " the Guitar Player turned out to be Eddie Van Halen playing that beautiful stuff at the end.........

Don Dokken featuring John Norum

Great rhythm tone
Solo kicks in at 2:45

My two favorite tones from that period.

80's style

Honorable Mentions

The Def Leppard High 'n Dry tones are my favorite marshall tones to this day.

I know this tune just missed the 80s finish line but it is what I hear when I think of "pissed off Marshall tone":

The Scream (one of the best releases from this generation of bands. Gotta love Bruce Boulliet). Raunchy Marshall tones here:

Maybe obvious but not mentioned enough here. Always loved the tone on this album and tune. Frank is a heck of a player:

Kind of a ghey band but loved their tone on this tune. Pretty catchy tunes too (sorry about the video but couldn't find the tune alone):

Always loved this tune from Y&T and Dave's tone is pretty stock Marshall with a boost in front to my ears:

Rage For Order and Mindcrime. Pretty sure they had some JCM tone on those albums, as well as other amps blended (Soldano?) Empire is sonically PERFECT but I can't include it since it was post 80's.

Hmm, not sure what else as far as "not obvious"...maybe Cantrell's pre-Bogner tone from the 80's stuff they did. That was pretty cool. (but obviously nothing like his Bogner-Marshall signature tone)

not sure if this was marshall or laney, his tech says in the studio he used both with a les paul

For my money, Mick Sweda of the Bullet Boys had a huge tone. One of the best sounds of that era in my opinion. Big and thick and juicy. He was alaos an awesome player as well.....

Loudness had some killer tones.

The more I am hearing some of the Headhunter era Krokus, I'm diggin' the lead tones and some of the rythym ones. Never paid too much attention to their tones back in the day.

That's the singer that I gig with on weekends in a cover band.
He's has a great voice and that first Von Groove CD was pretty good....but that video is kinda gay. :D

It's funny when we say Marshall tones because a lot of what has been mentioned in this thread the tones came from a Modded Marshall :D

Ronnie LeTekro of course but just to keep with the title of this thread if we are going for Marshall tones (and I can name a ton that I dig)

This one from me might surprise a lot of people!!

Unf'ckin believable! This is where I was going...never thought somebody would have beat me to it

I'll add:

It's Loverboy!! I know...I know...

But I've always thought this is a great cranked Marshall tone on the intro....nice and meaty. Listen up to 1:00

I was gonna say either of these but you beat me to it. Wolf's tone was so badass on that album, way ahead of its time in a way. Jake's tone was killer and it fit that record so well. Killer of Giants is my all time favorite Ozzy tune but Lightning Strikes is badass, too.
