For me it has been Tony MacAlpine for at least 30+ years.

It's not just his technique, it's his melodicism and song writing. He never bores me.

Too many shredders put me to sleep with barrage of notes. Tony's music is varied and dare I say? Beautiful?

Here is a comparison of old and new:

Yngwie. He's ridiculous and now rather repetitive but his early stuff is still mind blowing to me and he's a blast to see live because he's just so Yngwie.

I saw Yngwie when he first came to the US 83'-84'? and was in Steeler. He was no doubt jaw-dropping good. His technique is incredible! But his songwriting has gone nowhere since his first few albums. I can't even watch him anymore...

Macalpine is unfortunately slept upon. Tears Of Sahara is just such a sweet ass song with tasty solos. It helps that Lynch played on it too.

I'd have to probably go with Yngwie as well, or Marty. Nuno definitely has a very very unique thing going on with his muting when he's burning the notes out. Pablo Gilberto has such precision as well. There are so many that are great, but I'd have to go with Yngwie or Marty.

The problem is almost any shredder I’ve heard doesn’t have good/deep musical content they play during the shreddy parts. That being said, I’ll say Guthrie Govan. He’s a beast

I don’t really consider them shredders, but Randy Rhoads and Marty Friedman have always been my 2 overall favorite lead players. They actually care about crafting tasteful musical lines and phrasing
