Lately I have been listening to film scores. While some don't make a whole lot of sense on their own, some are magnificent pieces in their own right.
I think I find them so fascinating because they are almost without any traditional structure. Listening to them in a dark room with some great headphones can take you to some amazing places.

At the moment my favourite is James Horner's score from Braveheart.

Anyone?

ennio morricone the mission
peter Gabriel the last temptation of christ

Honestly? The Halo series have amazing soundtracks. Not quite the same as traditional movie soundtracks, but fall into the same category you're talking about here. I got hooked on Halo 2 (Steve Vai did the theme song in Halo 2), and Halo 3 and Reach soundtracks, while missing Steve Vai, are equally compelling.

John Williams. Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

Howard Shore. Lord Of The Rings.

Yeah... That one is pretty breathtaking.

And when thinking of movies we have to mention John Barry and the James Bond 007 theme. Damm, i love that song.

The Empire Strikes Back by John Williams

Superman by John Williams

Top Gun Anthem by Harold Faltermeyer & Steve Stevens

The Godfather by Nino Rota

Dragon: the Bruce Lee Story by Randy Edelman

It's hard for me to choose Braveheart or The Perfect Storm as my favorite. There are moments of unbelievable writing in each.

It's hard to go with anything from Horner. He's a modern day genius.

This is actually the origin of my online name.....

Lord Of The Rings.

Platoon.

Starwars.

Superbad, well.. it's not really a score but it's got some groovy songs on.

My two favorites are LOTR and the fountain. The fountain soundtrack gives me chills at times...

That was awesome.

It actually saddens me, knowing that I will never experience playing in a big ensemble like that.

Lots of good stuff here.

I'll throw out Hans Zimmer's work in both Batman's.....particularly 'Dark Knight.'

resident evil - Manson did a great job with that one...

Star wars

The Matrix

The new Tron soundtrack - Daft Punk

Halloween - John Carpenter

Forrest Gump has a great score. And the soundtrack is killer. Pretty much my favorite movie of all time.

Agree with Halo having great music and I just watched Inception the other night and was thinking that the score is really cool on that too.

LOTR' score is great too.

Brian Reitzell 30 Days of Night,I don't even like electronic music but this soundtrack made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Creepy to say the least, and he's actually a guitarist.
