The "First Guitar Hero" thread made me think about who was my first "real" guitar hero other than the obvious "famous" ones that I admired & was inspired to emulate via recordings etc. etc. It's been almost thirty years for me, & to this day I'll never forget the guy's name or the advice he gave me when I asked him, "How do you play that lead guitar?". His reply: "Just follow the dots........"  To this day, some thirty years later, that advice still pops into my head if I've had one too many tequila's during a gig.......

His Name: Ron Murphy (Somewhere in the Rocky Mountains) Thanks Brother.........................................

Mine was a guy named Scott Lane. I think he's still around playing in the area actually, but anyway, he was a killer playing lefty in an original band named Soleil Rouge. Any of the guys that were in the L.A. O.C. area around the time probably remember them. It was back when Dante Fox (Great White), Ala Carte, Snow (Carlos Cavazo), Steeler, etc. were around in the early 80's.

I need to see if I can find Scott to say hello...

I keep hearing their name come up a lot....how good were they?

wow...i'm from a small town...rigby, id near idaho falls, id...no local or hometown heroes really (as far as major gigging bands go) but there were a few dudes we looked up to a bit.

-james pickerell (so jesus cried) - great singer and he really had the "rockstar" look. i still see him around. he's a huge clutch fan now.
-jaimie adams (thrash cowboys) - wikid guitarist but yeah, he went to GIT so what do we expect? he gave lessons to my old guitarist.

i guess the other guys would be us. jerimiah peterson of denots, waylen andersen of denots and myself...we been around the longest and always have peeps comin' up and tellin' us how they saw a show back in the day and it made them wanna play. it's pretty cool...overblown, but cool.
ya know...we never got any help from any of the older bands and had to create our own scene. we weren't even old enough to get in the bars to see what it was like to play/put on a show. i'm pretty proud of the fact that there are quite a few bands around the area, that are doing pretty decent, and that i had a hand in it.

there aren't any guitarists who i know do metal locally to me, so no real local hero

Being from a small town (Burlington, VT) there weren't assloads of big guitarists, but there was a guy named Andre from a cover band called 8084. I think he's still playing in the same band.

There was another guy who lived up there for a while named Dug Blair (or Dug Lucek depending on when you saw him) who played with Run21 and went on to play with WASP.

I saw Trey Anastasio a few times, but never got into him or Phish. In fact I was a cameraman for a demo live/vid they did while I was in college.

I've heard Nothingface was from Baltimore, but I've never seen them.

right on...just thought i'd heard that somewhere.

I wish I could remember who was first, but it was one of these Chicago guys. Derek Frigo in LeMans was a local Chicago hero. He went on to play in Enuff Z'Nuff. There was also Dave Shankle from Paradoxx. He went on to play in Manowar. Or possibly Marty Fitzgerald from War Cry. He was a huge influence on me early on tone-wise. He just had the most monster tone. He used a black Charvel Star into two Marshall heads in stereo with a Boss SD-1 into an Ibanez CS-9 chorus and had two Orange cabs. War Cry moved to LA in the late 80's and became the ultra glam Tommi Gunn.

Those were my first local heroes.

Derek Frigo was great in LeMans.....totally different when he went to Enuff. Shame about him. :(

I grew up in a small, rural Indiana town, but there were 2 monster guitar players there - John Abel and Kenny Moore - those guys taught me all kinds of stuff and I don't think they ever charged me a dime. Great dudes - because of them and their sharing their knowledge with me I have a real hard time charging people for lessons.

Bob,
Scott was in Max Havoc too wasn't he? I never saw them but I had their album and Scott Lane played some pretty cool stuff on it.

Yep, same Scott. He played for a while with Roxx Regimes (Stryper) too.

I don't think that I had a local hero but I definitely had my local faves!!

One was Jon Levin who is now playing in Dokken. Jon was an insane player even when he was 16. He always had a massive tone when I went to see him. To be honest with you, he is not even showing a 10th of what he is capable of doing on the guitar in Dokken compared to what he used to do when he was younger.

The second guy I used to dig was Al Pitrelli. Al was one of my first guitar teachers. Al used to be able to play metal and then go into some sick bee bop licks! Its was always very cool to see!
You guys are going to laugh but Al used to play with Michael Bolton when Bolton was rock/metal   When I was 18, I drove to Boston with a friend to go see Al play when he was in Boltons band.

Then there was John petrucci. I got to Jam with him and see him play when the band was called Majesty and I knew that they were going to get signed.
John P and John M. used to work at a local guitar store and we all used to hang out. The problem is that John kind of dropped everyone as soon as he got signed. Its a shame really.

Then there was John Petruci's friend/nemesis and a good friend of mine Named Rich Kern. Rich is an amazing player who can play his ass off. He was as good if not better the petrucci... I know that sounds like a tall statement but its absolutely true. Rich was the one who introduced me to John.
Rich kind of lost interest in shredding and kind of stopped playing that style.

John mayer is from my town. he graduated highschool the year before i was going in. he used to be in a band with my best buddies older brother and we would watch them practice and play shows all the time. then we got james blake the tennis pro, and the actor justin long who is going out with drew barrymore
