I keep hearing their name come up a lot....how good were they?

You keep hearing of Soleil Rouge? They haven't been around since the early 80's and I don't find much online about them. But, I thought they were great. A guy named Kelly Martella played drums for them and I believe he played for W.A.S.P. for a short time.

John "The Cat" Gatti and Mickey Marchello from The Good Rats were my local heros in Long Island growing up.

The Good Rats were an amazing two guitar band that mixed commercial hard rock with great leads, twin guitar hamonies and jazz overtones. The best album was called "Tasty" and had an incredible twin guitar instrumental called "Klash-Ka-Bob". Unbelievably underated band... Joe Franco played drums in the band and you might recognize the name from his having played with Vinnie Moore, Blues Saraceno, Leslie West, Al Pitrelli and Jack Bruce. Quite a resume...

Check 'em out live in '78:

the guitarists from "Trouble" were one of mine!!! also...John Dobbs, from Paradoxx, was another!!! then there was local guitar whiz,Dave Uhrich, who also taught guitar at the same little music store that i bought my 1991 Ibanez RG565 from,brand-new in early '92,which was called Minstrel Music in Niles,Illinois......hello Niles,Illinois!!!!!!

I wouldn't say I had a local hero. Probably the one person that I actually knew that had some success was Sebastian Marino and he was doing studio work for awhile and then ended up playing in Anvil and the Overkill after that. I don't live there anymore so I have no idea what he is doing now.

Mine was a fiend I grew up with, Waldon Reed. I think I first met him in 3rd grade. He started playing in elementary school I believe. In 7th or 8th grade he was a in a band that played our Jr High school Dance and they jammed Blackfoot's Highway Song. I didn't start on guitar until I was in high school. Wally was a great guitar player and I took lessons off and on with him for a few years. I'd stop and when I'd get in a rut in my playing I'd just call him up and start taking a few lessons just to really be inspired. he taught me versatility as he was a great rock player, classical player and fusion player. He'd give me jazzy progressions to improvise over that included 3rds, 7ths and 9ths so I couldn't cheat and really had to think lol.

He still is playing and an excellent musician and composer https://www.myspace.com/waldonreedjr Check out his instrumental work. On of my favorites is his Guitar Noir album.

Craig Goldy ( who back in the day was really ahead of a lot of players), Jake Williams ( E Lee), Danny Robinson ( Black dude that could play Rhoads/VH to a tee) and Jeff Snider ( Snider Amplification) who was the equivalent to a Mike Landau/Lukather and still is in town.

In Chicago, Dave Uhrich and Dave Shankle come to mind. I also have to give a nod to Dan Ragan who taught at The Pick Stop in LaGrange Illinois. The guy had an incredible knowledge of music and, I believe, perfect pitch. When I was 14 or so years old and just hanging out in The Pick Stop, Dan would hear a tune on the radio and start calling out the chord changes to us. He was a really cool guy who, even if you weren't a student of his, would hang out all day in The Pick Stop chatting about guitar and sharing all he knew about music theory.

Faith Or Fear from my home town gave me a lot of inspiration back in the late 80's

Trocadero Philly

1988,heard a guy playing in our local music store "Gordy's" i asked if he's give me lessons,he played everything, country, punk, rock hard rock and he knew his stuff, him and John 5 were in a band together, besides seeing Hetfield using Mesa Boogie, this guy did too,got me turned on to them,i remember he said it was a modded Fender, anyway, his name is "Dan Miller" he played Johnny Cash's guitar in "Walk The Line" he now plays in an alt country band called "Blanche" but he got me into Yes,Crimson,Waits,Di meola etc etc etc,all the greats that weren't metal. He made an impression on me,i didn't know there was so much more music out there, and to this day i still listen to all the cats he told me about.
The only song he taught me was "I'll see you in the light tonight"? Yngwie

A friend of mine from here in south jersey,Mario Parillo, played great blues, rock and metal.he was in a band called Oktober, then went on to play with Doro Pesch before passing away about ten years ago.

Oktober I still have their E.P Demo tape if it is the same band I am thinking of made up of some of the members from the Atco/Bonnies Roxx area band Minx??
Kinda like a lighter Thrash metal.

Yeah that's them ,bob jones sang,Brian morano on rhythm guitar,he left then Ron Hickman took over and shaded leads with Mario.they were a cool band

casey orr was in jr.high and high school with me. he played bass in rigor mortis. went on to play in gwar. he showed me a lot of bass tricks. when he formed rigor mortis, he has mike scaccia playing with him. mike showed me a lot of tricks too. mike went on to play in ministry with al.

met darrell abbott when we were sophmores in high school. he showed me a bunch of stuff, and taught me how to use it. sold me a cheap r.rhoades copy outta his closet when i switched to guitar.

but the biggest influence was Walter Trachsler of the band Rotting Corpse. i was so blown away playing with him i switched to thrash rhythm guitar. he was also a friend of darrells, and darrell actually hooked us up when we formed rotting corpse. darrell didn't "get" thrash at the time, and him and vince used to rag us hard, saying music that heavy would never sell. when we recorded corpse demos at pantego sound, darrell, vince, and the eldn would just cringe at the "no holds barred" version of metal we were playing. they used to rag hard on bands like slayer....that makes me laugh hard thinking about it now. walter's rhythm guitar work was insane, he just plowed the strings like they insulted his mom. all the while he would be wind-milling his hair while going to town on stage. great raw vocal style too.
