Youtube clip... Eruption cover... completely nailed

First off....hell yes, he flat out nailed it. Note for note. He can play circles around me and will always be able to play circles around me. His tone ripped, his technique was stunning.

That said, I'll never understand the need to imitate what others have done to that degree. I love cover bands and I love diving into a good tab.....but for me, I play to see what I can come up with. I'm a basement wanker and will alway be a basement wanker....but I'm a basement wanker who plays his own schtuff 95% of the time.

I'm sure this guy plays his own stuff and does it brilliantly.....but I think you know what I'm getting at.

Talent aside, his mastering of that is what makes him a better player. Obviously he has commitment and drive. Sometimes doing your own thing just doesn't push you enough to grow in your own craft. We need to explore different styles and techniques by those that came before. There is no way we can re-invent everything. But we can add to it. It would be interesting to hear his original material for sure, but I'm sure the technique would be there, whether or not the creativity. Every great player has sat down, wood shedded, and perfected other's licks. It's where you take them from there that matters.

I completely agree with that statement. I play my own stuff the majority of the time, but it's so easy to get into ruts with my technique that way. Learning other stuff can really open up doors I wouldn't have thought of on my own and more often than not it is mastering those small, or big, details that forces me to grow. I'm in a Metallica cover band right now and dissecting some of those rhythym parts has really helped me. Some parts I could've played "my" way and no one would've known, but getting down to the details and nailing them has been helping me become a better player for sure.
