First off....hell yes, he flat out nailed it. Note for note. He can play circles around me and will always be able to play circles around me. His tone ripped, his technique was stunning.

That said, I'll never understand the need to imitate what others have done to that degree. I love cover bands and I love diving into a good tab.....but for me, I play to see what I can come up with. I'm a basement wanker and will alway be a basement wanker....but I'm a basement wanker who plays his own schtuff 95% of the time.

I'm sure this guy plays his own stuff and does it brilliantly.....but I think you know what I'm getting at.

Dude:
You are trying to summarize this guys entire music portfolio, ability, and persona based off a youtube clip. He's surely having fun, as I do when I am rocking out to a song I know. No need to get psychological about it.

I'll risk the bullets and say I kind of agree with HottKarl here. Yes...this is a completely impressive EVH thing going here....but whenever a player nails someone else's stuff THIS well....it doesn't come off all that different from someone kicking ass on the hardest level of a video game.

I'm a huge EVH fan, so I loved it as much as anyone here.....but I share HottKarl's words on how many of this guy's hours were spent perfectly replicating someone else. (nothing wrong with that.......I'm just sayin'........)

I completely disagree. I like to learn other people’s music 100% so I can understand what they were thinking, feeling and doing. Take a look at 99% of solo violinists. They are playing Bach, Paganini, etc, note for note. Paganini's caprices are to be played note for note to make a virtuoso out of a violin player, not to have someone learn 1/2 of it and get lazy and try to make it their own... :)

thats an excellent point Dave and i'd like to expand. The rigidness of playing Classical music is a non-negotiable in terms of note perfectness...however, every classical instrumentalists will put their own spin on it in terms of phrasing, contour/rhythm and even tempo at times once they've got the notes down. when i hear Glenn Gould play Bach vs. someone on a low end Classical label, i can really hear the difference. Most of the great's read about how these geniuses felt when writitng these pieces, either through diaries/notes or transcripts... and that's the only form of reference they had. its not like they had records or cd's back then. I've seen SO many great guitars in Van Halen cover bands do Edward note for note, but 90 percent of them lack the "swing" feel that he naturally has. Ritchie Blackmore did some really clever and tricky stuff in early purple that even a technical wizard would need to sit down and listen constantly to nail it. Its important and essential IMO...and actually gratifying.

But when you see guys with Van Halen graphic charvels, blindly worshiping and chasing after the brown tone it becomes a little ridiculous. I don't think you're ever going to know what Eddie was thinking or feeling by playing his stuff and i doubt Eddie was playing anyone elses stuff back then like all these VH cloners have been playing his stuff.

But, don't get me wrong, it's great to play music you love but IMHO it's just hero worship and i think there's nothing wrong with it. But look around, nobody is getting a record contract anymore by copying VH since 1990.

We can completely agree to completely disagree. You can compare this to Classical musicians, and I'll compare it to obsessive fanboy-ism. Either way.....the chances of a great new song are VERY slim.

It all depends on what you do with it Gary. Ive seen guys dig in and learn every nuance of the artist to such a degree that its a little scary; Its what they take from it and what they do with it after that. Some of those guys end up being nothing more than mimics and some of them have their own voice and do their own thing. Listen to Anthony(70's Strathead) that guy does Yngwie, Blackmore and others like NO ONE that Ive ever heard but he clearly has his own thing going on with his original material. Then you get the guys who think that they have mastered a style and then pump out clip after clip of the same tired rehashed licks. IMHO, its what you do with it that matters in the end

I could never be bothered to dig in and learn to play like someone else because I thought that it was uncool UNTIL I got asked to play in a short lived Journey tribute band. I learned so many cool things that have transferred to my own playing that it had me kicking myself in the head for not doing it much earlier on. AFAIC, Id tell any younger player to really dig in and learn tunes from the people that inspires him and learn from it and use it to foge his own path..
