wow, check out at about 4:20 - supposed to be Randy playing blues - sounds killer! Per the Youtube blurb...

"This is a Rare Guitar solo that was recorded on a BoomBox in 77-78 by Kelle Rhoads of Randy Jamming/Freestyling the Blues that is part of the "Sequence" of Kelle Rhoads "Radio Sequence" from his album Portrait of Oblivion"

Bizarre track but Randy is tearing it up in that section. Thanks Darren!

lol... he's horrible at blues but he kicks ass at ripping it up with his sig licks across the fretboard! He doesn't let his notes breathe at all but you can hear it is him. He had his fave scales just like Yngwie.

oh man, yeah obviously not traditional blues - but I liked hearing him play like that in that setting.

Oh yeah, he's very unique.
He speaks to me the way he plays a solo. I dig his phrasing and note choice. I dig his vibrato and squeals. Very cool style. I wanted to be like him when I started playing guitar more seriously in high school.
Learning a solo from him is a clever guitar lesson. He's not just a pentatonic type player, he really uses some nice modes and interesting note choices.

+ 1 , I always learned a lot from the way he played those leads on the tribute album ..amazing stuff. You said it best, he used quitea few modes and threw in some diminished and flats in there too to really spice it up. He was one of those guys I think who really thrived live. No excuses, just pure energy and skill. Here's to hoping they release some of the Tribute live footage they have hidden away.
