Socialist NYC Mayor Mamdani Admits Defeat, Delays Budget and Begs Albany for Bailout
New York City’s socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani just waved the white flag on his radical agenda, kicking the can down the road on a massive multibillion-dollar budget crisis he helped create. Facing a gaping 5.4 billion dollar hole, the freshman mayor announced a delay of the city’s executive budget deadline from May 1 to May 12, teaming up with City Council Speaker Julie Menin to plead for more cash from the state.
In the press conference, Mamdani laid it out plainly: “We are extending the executive budget deadline from this coming Friday until May 12, because a crisis of this scale cannot be solved without state action.” He added, “There is no amount of savings that will absolve Albany from the partnership that’s required to get all of us to a balanced budget by the end of this process.”
Menin echoed the desperation: “This adjustment reflects a very simple reality. New York state has not yet finalized its budget, and until they do so, we do not have the necessary clarity to responsibly complete the city’s budget.” She also griped that the city sends billions to Albany but gets less back, demanding they fix the “imbalance.”
This is classic big-government failure. Mamdani campaigned on soaking the rich, expanding handouts, and piling on taxes while pouring money into migrant shelters and pet progressive projects. Now, with the tax base fleeing to Florida and Texas, revenues are tanking and reality is hitting hard. Instead of cutting waste or reforming spending, he’s stalling and crying for a state rescue that Governor Hochul is already pushing back on.
New Yorkers voted for this experiment in socialism. They’re getting exactly what they asked for: higher costs, fewer services, and leaders who blame everyone else while begging for more of your money. The countdown to the next tax hike or service collapse is on.
