Much better than my G2.1Nu. Responds to pick attack/technique and guitar controls. small form factor. easy to use to tweak and control for live use (unlike the G2/G1 series). Sounds great in headphones, the looper and overdubbing is very usable for practice, as are the drum tracks. The direct recording feature is nice too. I may finally be able to make clips (once I find time to make my own presets, and have time to record. I got this last Wednesday, and did not have time to even play guitar until this past Monday night (late night)).

Many of the factory presets for high gain have hum and noise...too much. would be great if there was a global noise gate.

Best under $200 I've spent in a while. I thiought the G2.1Nu was good, but the G3 is usable...I could gig with this thing direct to FOH....other than the G9 (when it was released, IIRC 2007? too old now to compete IMO), this is the first Zoom modeler / MFX where I think it is viable for live use. IMO.

I've been a Zoom user since getting the 9002 back in the day; until the G2 Nu series they were toyish (except the G9 maybe), but the G3 is a very big quality step-up for Zoom. If you dismissed Zoom in the past, the G3 is worth a look as an MFX / modeler.

I dig it, but not the noise/hum. IMO. YMMV.

does the lack of a separate tap tempo footswitch annoy at all?

i liked the look/features of it, but seems less useable in that respect, as i'm a delay whore =0

No, doesn't bother me much. You can use an external footswitch and set it to control the tap tempo, but then you can't have an expression pedal.
